Cos fan tutte - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
In 1786 Mozart composed his wonderful opera Le Nozze di Figaro (KV 492). The Italian libretto, based on the play Le mariage de Figaro by Beaumarchais, was written by Lorenzo da Ponte--who also made the libretti of Mozart's opera's Don Giovanni and Cos fan tutte. In the opera Le Nozze di Figaro, Count Almaviva tries to seduce the fiance of Figaro, his valet. Eventually, through four acts full of complicated intrigue, he is outwitted. In his music, Mozart--at times in a humorous way--reflects the numerous social and erotic intrigues with both empathy and insight. The brilliant overture is just as vivacious and witty as the opera itself. Mozart delightfullyanticipates the passion and playful love that is to come. The skillful transcription for concert band by Tohru Takahashi certainly does justice to this appealing music.

Benvenuto Cellini - Hector Berlioz
Hector Berlioz was known for his innovative and creative musical gestures. He composed the opera Benvenuto Cellini in 1838, based on the fascinating life of a 16th century Italian goldsmith of the same name. Unfortunately the work as a whole never gained much popularity however its colourful and exciting overture has, on the other hand, become a firm favourite. Festive Overture - Dimitri Shostakovich
Festive Overture was composed in 1954 to commemorate the 37th birthday of the October Revolution of 1917. With this overture Shostakovich shows his brighter side, in contrast to his melancholy 10th symphony written in the previous year. The premiere of this piece took place on November 6, 1954 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Shostakovich makes great use of different themes which he alternates and intermingles in a masterly way. This skilful transcription by Tohru Takahashi retains all the grandeur of the original.

In 1880, Edvard Grieg composed twelve song poems by Aasmund Olavsson Vinje. He arranged two of these songs for String Orchestra published under the title of Two Elegiac Melodies, Op. 34. These two deeply meloncholy pieces were titled The Wounded Heart and Last Spring. The latter of these two titles inspired Tohru Takahashi to produce this expressive and sensitive transcription for Concert Band, which will make a fantastic encore piece for any concert.

Cherubini made his Paris debut with Dmophon, which premiered in 1788. Tohru Takahashi has arranged this dramatic overture for concert band, with specific parts for oboe, bassoon and saxophone among others. However, since the important parts are also included as cues in the score, it can be adapted to a more limited instrumentation.

Ravel's ballet, Daphnis and Chlo, was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev and premiered with the Ballets Russes in Paris in 1912. The ballet is now rarely performed, but its Suite No. 2 remains popular. It consists of three movements, Lever du jour, Pantomime and Danse gnrale, that are played without interruption. Tohru Takahashi makes no compromises in his transcription, which calls for at least 60 musicians and an optional mixed chorus!

When Berlioz won the Prix de Rome in 1830 he had already composed several major works such as the Symphonie Fantastique. Indeed, he became the essential French romantic composer. The Hungarian March is taken from the fourth act of The Damnation of Faust, a dramatic legend composed in 1846 and sometimes performed in the form of an opera. Russian Easter Overture Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Rimsky-Korsakov composed his three greatest orchestral works over a short period: he completed Capriccio Espagnol in 1887, and he composed Russian Easter Overture in 1888, simultaneously with the symphonic suite Scheherazade. Russian Easter Overture is a magnificent overture in a single movement that was dedicated to the composers Borodin and Moussorgsky. Several hymns of the Russian Orthodox Church create a characteristic atmosphere.
