The history of paper ranges over more than five thousand years: likely starting around 3500 BC in old Egypt with the use of papyrus. The oldest findings of written paper date from 2700 BC. In China, the first production of paper took place in the year 105 AD. The Arabs acquired their knowledge of the art of making paper around 750 AD, thanks to Chinese prisoners of war. Around the same time, the Celtic Ogham script was created in Ireland and carved into stones or trees. In Europe, the first paper mill was not put into operation until the 12th century! No matter how different the production methods and its historical use, paper was always a way to pass on wisdom, art and knowledge. Even today, in the age of digitalisation, paper still has a somewhat 'sacred' image. With Papyrus, Thomas Doss has written a wonderful composition in which the history of paper is reflected, and listeners can very much hear the various periods of this history represented throughout the piece. The Wand of Youth suites were written in 1869 when Elgar was only twelve years old, music written for a play and acted by the Elgar children for a private family theatrical production. He noted the tunes down in a sketchbook and in 1907, forty years later, he rearranged with only minor changes and orchestrated them as the two suites titled The Wand of Youth, Suite Nos. 1 and 2. Although the Wand of Youth Suites date from Elgar's mature years, he insisted on calling it Opus 1, because he wrote these pieces originally for piano many years earlier. The March is the first movement of The Wand of Youth, Suite No. 2. The arranger has presented this movement as an example of an excellent concert opener or warm-up march for a festival or contest performance because of its delicacy, yet determination.

Lux Futura (Light of the Future) was commissioned by the Royal Wind Orchestra Delft and is inspired by the letters 'D-E-L-F-T' using the letter notation system by B?la Bart?k. In this 'Delft' cell, there is referral to the 'Trinitas', the bourdon bell of the Old Church in Delft, that only tolls during a funeral of a member of the Dutch Royal Family. The Delft melody switches to the 'Agneta March', which is a reference to the history of the Royal Wind Orchestra Delft. Further on the love theme, played by the bass instruments represents the love of the inhabitants for their city throughout space and time. In the middle movement, the beauty of the city is depicted by the cor anglais (English horn) solo, as an ode to the lovely city of Delft. When performed, one can choose to use sound city samples recorded in Delft to create a truly magnificent spectacle. Duration: 17.00
