£91.99The Sun Will Rise Again - Philip Sparke
The composer writes:"On March 11th 2011 a massive 9.0- magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of north-eastern Japan.I'm writing these programme notes barely a week later and the death toll caused by the quake and resulting tsunami already exceeds 6000, with thousands of people still unaccounted for. I have many friends associated with many bands throughout Japan and one of these, Yutaka Nishida, suggested I write a piece to raise money to help those affected by the disaster. I was immediately attracted by the idea and have arranged Cantilena (a brass band piece recently commissioned by the Grenland International Brass Festival, Norway) for wind band, giving it a new title tohonour my friends in the Land of the Rising Sun.I will be donating royalties from this piece to the Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Relief Fund and am delighted to say that my distributors, De Haske, who will generously also donate all net profits from sales of this piece, have pledged a substantial advance payment to the Red Cross so that what little help this project generates can be immediate.It is my sincere wish that this 'Band Aid' project will allow wind bands around the world support the people of Japan, where bands are a way of life for many, in this difficult time".Philip Sparke

This composition exudes serenity and tranquillity, but also intensity and expressiveness - giving it similar qualities to earlier works by Van der Roost, like Canterbury Chorale and Adagio for Winds. Long melodic lines characterize the main themes that arise in different registers and develop through varying keys. The band rather sounds like an organ: the varying timbres and broad musical phrases fully justify the comparison with this majestic instrument. There is no bombast, and the work contains no exaggerated technical or rhythmic tours de force. On the contrary, from a lush richness it moves towards a softening final passage that culminates in a slowly fading final chord: following the many warm harmonies and grand melodies, this work concludes in a contemplative mood.

The melody as well as the harmonic sequence certainly recalls things already heard like an old friend... It is a lively and energetic image of friendship. Theme B, on the other hand, is calmer. It is a nostalgic side of friendship represented here. The song ends with the same motif as the introduction.

Interlude - Wilhem Stenhammar
Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) was a Swedish pianist, conductor and composer. His compositions include incidental music, operas, concerts, two symphonies and choral works. Initially influenced above all by Wagner and Bruckner, Stenhammar increasingly welcomed in his music a Nordic colour as well as melodic and rhythmic characters typical of Swedish folklore. Completed in 1921, the cantata Sngen (The Song) was Stenhammar's last major work, and its combination of harmonic richness and contrapuntal dexterity ensured it a warm reception.The Interlude connecting the two halves of the work is the only part frequently performed today. It begins by creating a serious and intimate atmosphere, then the music gradually unfolds in increasingly powerful sonorities. Towards the middle a noble brass chorale emerges, but neither this nor the following finely crafted climax manage to change the prevailing mood of subtle melancholy typical of late Romantic Scandinavian composers. This arrangement by Franco Cesarini will allow your audience to get to know this great composer unknown to most.

Today, Voestalpine is a company specialising in technology and industrial goods. Founded nearly 150 years ago, it has played an important role in the steel and iron industry throughout its history. The company displays an impressive "Contemporary History Exhibition 1938-1945" commemorating the victims of National Socialist forced labour in the factory during WWII. 'Iron Ring' refers to the company logo during that time. This work is a symphonic poem-like composition, describing different aspects of the companies' history in four musical scenes.
