Et in terra Pax (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

This piece was commissioned by the Concert Band Vlamertinge and is a plea for peace: the title translates as Peace on Earth. This is expressed by means of the vocal contribution expected from the performers. In various places of the piece you can recognize, the words Et In Terra Pax, an appeal for peace, at first jumbled together but later more rhythmically structured, developing into synchronized massed voices. The work starts with a pentatonic theme based on the notes D, E, G, A and C (taken from 'ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtinGE' and the name of the conductor, NiCk VAnDEnDriessChe). A somewhat sad melody is developed during an orchestral climax which leads to the first explosion of sound (measure 62 onwards). Suddenly the opening measures are recaptured, albeit with a differently coloured sound: the words Et in Terra Pax bring the first movement to a close. A restless Allegro follows which abruptly stops and is replaced by a calming chorale-like passage. A narrator reads aloud the poem 'Sonnet' by the young poet Charles Hamilton Sorley, who was killed during World War I. This poem fittingly puts into words the cruelty and senselessness of war. After the expanded recapitulation of the allegro, the broad, almost infinite atmosphere of the beginning returns. Clarinet and English horn play the pentatonic opening theme once more, this time broadly, while the words Et in Terra Pax are repeated again and again by the rest of the ensemble. The composer has purposely avoided all forms of aggression and bombastic sounds regularly used in works about war. Fear of violence and destruction can be heard and felt during the allegro passages. The charged opening makes way in the end for hope: May peacefulness replace cruelty in everyday life, too.Duration: 13:45

In the Center Ring - Robert Sheldon

"In The Center Ring" was written in the autumn of 2003 for the Upper Antioch Grade School Band from Antioch, Illinois, Earl Bush, director. The piece is a musical snapshot of a circus performance, from the madcap antics of the jugglers and clowns to the elegance of the high-wire and trapeze performers. This wild musical romp is certainly a technical challenge, but is also great fun for the performer and listener alike. Above all, remember this is a theatrical piece - so emphasize the dynamics, bring out the inherent comedy and have FUN! This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

O Canada (multi-level version) - Calixa Lavallée / arr. David Marlatt

Over the years there have been surprisingly few arrangements of the national anthem of Canada. This version is quite unique and will prove to be extremely useful in all kinds of performance situations. This is not an arrangement for only one difficultly level, it is for four! There are four versions found in everyone's part: All these versions are in the same key and use the same basic harmonies which means they are all completely interchangeable! If you have an excellent trumpet player in your grade 1 1/2 level band, she/he can play the next version up and it will all fit together and sound great! This revolutionary concept means that elementary schools and high schools can own the same set and combine players for a mass band concert. This set of arrangements is ideal for any program no matter what the diversity of talents.

North Shore Overture - David Marlatt

North Shore Boulevard is a street in Burlington, Canada near where settlers landed their ships and established their family roots in the early 1800s. Times were tough but so were they. This piece is split into sections depicting the people and the events that occurred at that time. Full of character and interesting rhythms, this unique overture would work equally well for concert or contest use. This is a great piece to expose developing players to lots of syncopation and some "extra flat notes" not commonly used for music at this level. North Shore Overture is an excellent end of year piece or something to start off a higher level band as their first piece of the year. (2:25)

    Rigaudon

The rigaudon is a French Baroque dance in a lively duple meter. Rhythmically simple with a few syncopated lines, this short composition is the perfect introduction to this style. With varying dynamics, this is an excellent piece for developing a lighter playing style while also focusing on listening, articulations, and musical phrasing with repeats. Playable by as few as one on a part, this also works well for smaller bands with limited instrumentation.

    Tropanka and Patsh Tantz

This two-movement work is sure to be a hit at your next concert! The first movement, Tropanka (pronounced "tro-PAHN-kuh"), translates as "stomping dance" and originated in Bulgaria. One can hear two repeated notes at the end of each phrase - this is where the dancers stomp! The second movement, Patsh Tantz (pronounced "PAHTSH tahnts") is a classic example of Klezmer, or Eastern European Jewish folk music. The title of this movement is Yiddish for "clapping dance", and all the players get the chance to clap at certain points in their individual parts. Both movements should be played rhythmically; adding weight to many of the downbeats will help bring out the "earthy" character of the music.

The New Bennett Band Book - Harold Bennett

The Bennett Band Books, published in four volumes starting in 1923, were used to teach literally millions of young band musicians in the middle of the twentieth century the march form and style. The pieces utilized in this book are: Activity, Summit, Success, Project, Courage, Mister Joe, Genius, Improvement, At Sight, Little Rastus, Laurel and Aline. These delightful marches, composed by famous march composer Henry Fillmore using the pseudonym Harold Bennett, have been given new life by arranger Larry Clark. The original essence of these marches is retained and only the instrumentation and some range issues have been altered to fit the needs of today's developing bands. This collection includes twelve of the Bennett marches along with a helpful march warm-up section composed by Larry Clark to help you teach the march form and style to young students. There is the added benefit of a full recording of each march performed by a professional band on the CD that is included in the conductor's score. This is a valuable collection for any level band to use for marches at contest/festival performance or for sight-reading purposes.
