£104.50March from the Ballet Corso Donate - Joseph Lanner
A contemporary (and, some would say, rival) of Johann Strauss I in 19th-century Vienna, Joseph Lanner was, for a time, more popular and widely performed than his associate. After a much-publicized separation of the two musical giants, Lanner was appointed to the coveted post of Musik-Direktor of the Redoutensale in the Habsburg Imperial Palace. Lanners ballet was written in September of 1841; this superb Bourgeois edition brings the work to the wind ensemble repertoire. It is an outstanding example of the Austrian march genre.

£82.50Celestial Flight - Jim H. Johnson
"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth..." Inspired by the poem "High Flight" this work takes musical flight with sweeping woodwinds and mallets soaring above the cinematic melodic statement by brass. The highly rhythmic melody soars upward to the middle, lyrical section which seems to float effortlessly through the upper reaches of the sky. As the sustained expressive melody reaches it's musical apex it reunites with the opening material to finish with a swift and breathtaking finish.

£140.80Vespri Siciliani - Giuseppe Verdi
In 1885 Verdi wrote I Vespri Siciliani, an opera which would provide him with an international reputation. The overture is based on motifs and themes from the opera, used in a rhapsodic way. A mysterious introduction and several energetic themes alternate with some passionate melodies, the secret of which only Verdi had. The French composer and conductor Paul Desprey made this arrangement for symphonic band.

£131.30Hymns And Dances II - J. Slothouwer
In 1990 Jochem Slothouwer composed Hymns and Cances II. This work for symphonic band and harp (ad libitum) is based on Hymns and Dances I for piano, mixed choir and percussion. The compostition is based on the contrast between hymnlike melodies and dance music episodes. The work, in five connected parts, seems to look for a reconciliation of both melodic and rythmical elements. The initial theme with the horns and the answer of the band form the base of the first part. The second part, charcterized by a vitorous dance rhythm, is dominated by the percussionn and syncopated motifs with the brass. A melody with the euphoniums almost imperceptibly slips into the ensemble and gradually gets to the foreground. The dance and the hymn reach a real climax interrupted by a short and dark intermezzo (part three). The clear sonority of part four, a fiery tarantella with many small byt virtuoso solos, is a new contras. The final adagio reuses the previously developed ideas of part one and ends in sheer ecstasy.
