Filadelfia is a small town in the province of Vibo Valentia in the southern Italian region of Calabria. In 1783 the town suffered a devastating earthquake. This work depicts the events before and after the disaster, and starts peacefully, with dance-like music sounding in the streets. After this the earthquake destroys everything, causing deep despair. In the end, the town is being rebuilt, which calls for a festive celebration!

£228.70Symfoni nr. 1 'Fatum' - Symphony No. 1 "Fate" - Johan Halvorsen
Johan August Halvorsen (1864-1935) was born in Drammen and played violin and several brass instruments. He played in both orchestra and wind bands and in 1881 he became a student at Brigademusikken in Oslo. After a brilliant violinist career he proved himself talented as a conductor and composer. From 1899 he became conductor and composer at the National Theatre, where he wrote many of his most famous works. It was in this period in 1924 he wrote Fatum. Fatum means destiny and like Beethoven he opens the symphony with a motif he uses in all four movements. This work shows that Halvorsen was a great composer and a traditionalist.

This is an original piece of music composed by ystein Olsen Vadsten, inspired by old Norwegian folk dances. "Jumpety Jump" actually started out as a "reinlender" (Norwegian Folk Dance) which origins from Rhinland. The reinlender is well disguised in this arrangement by adding the shuffle- and swing style to it. The piece is first of all meant as a "happy go lucky" tune, but is full of rhythmical and technical challenges. Its put up as a jazz-tune, first presenting the melody, then "improvisasations" by the different instrument groups, before going back to the first theme. The title "Jumpety Jump" refers to the kind of jumping feeling the shuffle groove gives.

Candy for Beginners is a suite of three songs used by the composer with the youngest beginners throughout several years. The method is to sing the melodies before learning it on the instruments. Lyrics about candy has proven to be very popular among the youngsters.... In English it can goes like this: "Candy floss, candy floss, candy floss, candy floss, oh yeah". And: "Soda for me, give me soda for free". And: "Lefse, it is good, lefse, now you should, Lefse, give me one, lefse, sure is fun." The composer urges the band to find their own lyrics to the melodies, making it their own with a local twist. This is a good rhythmic exercise for the young players.

"Brittern" was written for my good friend, Brit Johnsrud to her Solo-CD recording "Light Blue Outfit". Brit is a former hornist with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and works today with the professional Navy Band in Bergen. This solo piece is inspired by traditional, Norwegian folk music. The slurs of the music it intended to make character to the "Halling" (A traditional Norwegian dance). The music also include trills, but for these the soloist may vary and decide where to play these. The tempo are approx. quarter note=88. Chords appears at letter E in solo part. This part of the piece may be improvised. If improvised, please omit some of the parts (are marked with May beomitted).

In this final section, the melody and accompaniment figures return with an energetic counterpoint woven in, building towards an exciting and dramatic finish to the piece. Despite his having moved to the United States with his family when he was 11 years old, Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) was born in Canada where glimpses of his talent had already begun to manifest themselves at an early age. Among Dett's earliest titles was his Characteristic March Two-Step, After the Cakewalk. Perhaps written when Dett was just a teenager, this current edition is wholly based upon its original 1901 band publication that was arranged by Lee Orean Smith. Smith was also responsible for preparing Dett's piano solo version for publication, as well as its form for theatre orchestra and mandolin club. Owing to the fact that Smith's highly idiomatic scoring was prepared for a band of that period, this edition adapts, edits and extends Smith's instrumentation in order to make it possible for Dett's music to become available to a new generation of musicians and listeners alike. (Grade 4)
