This 3-part work begins with a martial and heroic theme where the brass and drums play an important role. A second melodic theme contrasts with the first, although elements of the first theme remain clearly present and they in turn provide a link to the second, calmer movement which is introduced with a splendid solo on the saxophone. You can hear fragments of the first part here too.In the third part, the small drum begins to play the background theme and is followed by a grand group of brass instruments playing a heavy concert march which, after an increase of tempo, gradually ends in a grand finale which refers once again to the initial theme.

Fairy Tail Suite - Tsutomu Tajima
This work was complete in January 2013 to commemoration the 50th anniversary of the Iwate Prefecture Band Association. Conditions at the request were as follows:1: Does not have to be particularly relating to Iwate. It should be something that would be widely familiar to the whole country. 2: Should suit the contest piece requirements. 3: Must be a song that can be used at a graduation ceremony for student procession and recessional.4: Must include vocal parts with a beautiful melody.5: Must be a march.6: Must be a song that would be loved by many.They are difficult requests. I hope to satisfy at least one of them.We selected Yanagida Kunio's book "Tono Monogatari" as the cornerstone of the work, chose four stories that fit the image, and stuck close to the source of the story. Then, "prelude music" was added, making it a suite consisting of five movements.I. "Prelude" What kind of story will it be? An exciting opening expresses such a feeling.II. "Zashikiwarashi" Spirit that brings good fortune and wealth. It appears at midnight and makes mischief, something silly, not serious. Zashikiwarashi moves quickly, dances, plays its games, hiding and reappearing often. These characteristics are considered cute and the music depicts such a mischievous Zashikiwasi.III. "Oshirasama" A girl and her horse love each other. Her father forbids this, and kills the horse. The beautiful daughter clings to the horse and cries. Eventually, the daughter and the horse rise to heaven, slowly and gradually, remembering former happy days. The music captures this ascension to heaven.IV. "Yamanba (Mountain witch)" Run away, run away, its chasing, still chasing. Run away, and still chasing. The girls hides. Yamanba searches. It keeps chasing, endlessly, following her everywhere. Chasing, chasing, and finally... Seriously and comically depicting the chase situation in fugue style.V. "Kappa" Staring into the distance. It looks gallant. What is it looking at? Staring beyond the mountain? Perhaps it is longing for hope and happiness. This is an homage, a march, and cheering song for Kappa who never gives up and embraces dreams and hope.It is my wish that many people become familiar with this song.(2013.3.31 Tsushima Tashima)

Both arrangements are novel settings in which a beginning band can perform the standard folk songs found in the first few pages of most band methods. Because they are so easy to play, these arrangements by themselves would not make much of a concert, even for a beginning group. However, when used as incidental music to the story, the songs become sufficiently interesting to the audience, without taxing the capabilities of students who have only been playing for about 10 to 12 weeks.

At last the bass clarinet can shine in this major new solo work for bass clarinet and concert band. This composition begins with a rather mysterious opening passage with atmospheric sounds and effects. The soloist plays - preferably backstage - a number of fragments and melodic patterns, without actually "starting" the piece. After this somewhat hesitant introduction, a lively, cheerful allegro entitled Con Giocondita (with joy) bursts out. It is swarming with irregular meters, changing tempos, and polyrhythm, through which the listeners (and sometimes also the musicians) constantly get the feeling that they are being tossed around. The second movement brings rest andpeace making careful use of sound colours. The upbeat finale, titled Con Allegria (with cheerfulness), is the most significant movement for the soloist. This is a challenging piece of music that demands great virtuosity, but with the correct performer it will be a real highpoint in any concert..

This work was written in 2005, prompted by the composer's determination that young members of junior, music school and conservatoire wind ensembles should not be limited to transcriptions for lack of original compositions, especially contemporary ones. In the composition 'La terre' several aspects of Earth have been translated into sounds in an associative manner. The first part depicts Nature, Mother Earth, stability, the soil which is the source of life. Earth symbolizes tradition, rituals, fertility. In the music of the composition this can be heard in tonic and ostinato passages. Furthermore, human emotions such as gladness, sorrow, wonder, resignation, hope and despair, indissolubly connected as they are to mankind's life on earth, are musically reflected in sudden gusts of expression. Earth for us human beings is the solid ground on which everything in life takes place. In the second part different moodsare evoked in a sort of toccata. Now and then the music sounds fragmented, at other times as a solid whole. The robustness of the music in this part has its roots in the earth, originates from it. It reflects stability and strength, but love and nostalgia are also present in soft and fragile tones. 'La terre' is a musical narrative about Earth, in which music has been given ample room to show its many-sided beauty.

The Spanish war galleon with 64 cannons, built in Cuba between 1770 and 1771 for an English shipowner in the service of the King of Spain left Peru for Cadiz in 1784 with a huge cargo of copper, gold, silver and other valuables on board. There were also more than 400 people on board, including passengers, crew and Inca prisoners after a revolt. The Atlantic crossing went smoothly, passing Portugal to take advantage of favourable winds. The shipwreck off Peniche was the result of human error, apparently due to French maps with dramatic errors in the position of the islands of Berlengas and neighbouring islets. On 2 February 1786, the sea was calm and the night clear, but they hit the rock formation Papoa and the hull immediately broke in two. The bottom sank quickly, while the deck remained afloat for some time. 128 people lost their lives, including many Indians who were trapped in the basement. This shipwreck is considered one of the most important in maritime history.What the composer wants to convey, and what can be felt as one listens, is first of all the sound of power, of hope, of the glory of conquest, of the splendour of wealth. This is followed by the perception of the maritime environment, the harmony with the softness of the ocean, the gliding of the hull in the foam of the sea on sunny, blue days. But along with this tranquillity, you soon hear a rhythmic chain that makes you feel a representation of the hustle and bustle, of the busy crew, of the hard work of a sailor, of the desperation of an exotic people imprisoned in a dark, damp cellar. A distinct rhythm that reminds us of the "salero" of Andalusia, with its Arab influences and its people, the soothing of the resignation of others who are forced to submit. Then we clearly hear a crescendo that makes us imagine the agony of the collision that precedes the shipwreck. The breaking of the hull, the water flooding everything, the despair, the clash of bodies on the rocks, the tragedy to come. Before the "grand finale", in which the return of musical softness reminds us that the story is over. The supremacy of nature over human greed. The waves, though gentle, sweep the wreckage, the lives and the treasures of the New World to the bottom of the sea.

The two movements in this symphony have quite similar structure and length, and this is no coincidence. As a composer, I try to create two musical stories that comes from the same starting point and thought, but they sound and feel different. Music often describes something you cant say in words. This composer stands in the middle of the symphony, here personalized as trombone solo (or euphonium) and tries "Solitude Standing" to make a bridge between the two parts. - Stig Nordhagen -
