Sea of Hope is an optimistic work about new land arisen from the former Zuiderzee (the Netherlands). In the introduction, the sea is conveyed in all its glory and ferocity, through a melody that keeps you wondering whether it makes you happy or sad. Then, finally, there is a glimmer of hope, when the water is dammed up and the land partly reclaimed (by conversion into polder land). The town of Dronten, for instance, develops into a place where one day two people meet up and fall in love. This love is reflected in the slow, passionate middle movement. New life in the town is celebrated joyfully: the zest for life clearly shines through this part of the work, followed by optimism and celebration in the closing bars.Duration: 8.30

Many people when asked the question 'Do you have any hobbies?' will answer 'Shopping' (even though the female part of the population may be more interested in this than the male one). Of course it is great fun to walk about in a Shopping Mall, browsing in various small shops, looking for things you have always wanted to possess. This was what William Vean was doing one day when he came across the idea to write a composition in which several shops could try to sell their wares (and this idea didn't cost him a penny). First, the audience are taken to a 'Jeans store', then a 'Phone shop' is visited, after which a visit is made to a 'Perfumery'. The fourth part depicts a profession which is practised in several premises, namely that of shoplifter. In the fifth part there is room for a bite to eat at a Chinese restaurant, and finally after a visit to the hairdresser's it's time to go home. 10:00

Happy Harmony is a cheerful composition that puts wind music in the spotlight. The word 'harmony' can be interpreted in different ways. In countries like France, Belgium and the Netherlands, 'harmony' is the name given to a symphonic wind band. Secondly, the term generally refers to a feeling of unity, which is very much present amongst band musicians, owing to the communal connection that is created when playing together. Thirdly, there is of course the harmony that you find in music itself.This 'harmonious' work opens with a festive introduction leading to a catchy pop theme. The iconic Fantasia, - her most popular work, which brought her to prominence - is a composition for symphonic orchestra based on traditional Welsh nursery tunes and lullabies.It is a light-hearted musical journey through childhood in eight traditional tunes. The jubilant start to the work is echoed in the finale, with a calmer, but effectively scored middle section.The Fantasia was featured in the 2024 Last Night of the Proms. This salsa is a not-too-serious look at the shepherds and kings at the Christmas nativity scene. The shepherds are represented by the carol While Shepherds watched their flocks by night, appearing here in a minor key. They are a rather earthy crew as opposed to the more refined kings with their carol We Three Kings of Orient. At one point the shepherds try to show that they should not be underestimated with their allusion to Henry Purcell's song Nymphs and Shepherds but the arguments between the two groups continue to the very end.Technically the piece is not that difficult but it needs the appropriate rhythmic feel. There are several add-on latin percussion parts which are not essential but will add to the spirit of the music if you have the players available.Duration: 3.30
