This piece is a collection of three folk songs from Nord-Gudbrandsdal in Norway. To the Conductor: First part (from bar 8): The trumpets presents the theme while the horns and trombones represents a kind of echo "from a distance" and softer in style. Part two from bar 19: This is a dance in which the first and third beat are the most important. In part 3 (from bar 44) the phrasing should be 4+2+4+2.

This stunning fanfare by veteran composer Robert W. Smith was inspired by the historic and legendary Boeing B-17 aircraft used by the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. Beginning with a powerful timpani statement, the brass section responds with a bold introductory theme. Strong melodic lines interacting with woodwind flourishes make this piece sound more mature and difficult than the grade level indicates. "Italy is truly a magical land that has touched my heart beyond measure." These are the words describing the feelings that accompanied the various visits of the American conductor Wesley Broadnax in our country. Italian Impressions, a composition dedicated to Broadnax, portrays these feelings in three main sections that develop without interruption throughout the piece. The first section, "Magic Land," describes a trip to Rome and is a tribute to the splendor and magic of some of the venues in this city. Rich in historical and cultural significance, these places are moving because of their surprising architecture and artistic genius. The second part, "The Huge Castle," depicts his visit in the Umbrian Region. It is a reflective and suspended immersion in music that describes landscapes characterized by ancient houses, churches, courtyards, and squares. "Assisi," says Wesley, "is the city that glitters in the night sky, comparable to a huge castle!" The third part, "Medieval Ballad," is a reference to the city of Siena and Tuscany more generally. The main theme of this movement recalls medieval atmospheres and is based on the fourteenth-century ballad "Ecco la primavera" by Francesco Landino. The original material is presented, elaborated, and juxtaposed with new thematic motives, which lead to an energetic conclusion of the piece.

"Enjoy", but also savour, relish: this is not descriptive music, but music to be appreciated. From three points of view: the rhythm of the first movement, the melody of the second and the swing of the third. This piece is characterised by a continuous variation of timbres and colours, in a quest for instrumental solutions that are constantly changing. Examples of this are the main theme in the first movement, which provides the rhythmic backing for the introduction of the third movement, or the sinuous melody of the Bolero, which unravels in a constant development of sounds and timbres.

Many works are composed with the precise aim of describing landscapes, atmospheres or telling stories. "Composizione Prima", on the other hand, was composed with the sole intention of experimenting with some uses of modern musical language. The piece is formally structured in three movements: allegro, adagio and fanfare, without however complying with any standard pattern. The main theme, "fanfara", can be heard several times throughout the piece. It is the only feature of this work that in any way evokes an onomatopoeic sound, to indicate the gradual approach through three dimensional space of a Napoleonic band (fanfare).

This piece features two themes: one is slow and contemplative, the other is quicker and more rhythmic. The themes are repeated and rearranged several times in a combination of different harmonies and sound mixtures. Both arising out of one phrase, the two themes have been developed in a number of ways using modality as a language. Tiny fragments of the theme introduce and link the various moments. These fragments, repeated using different rhythms and combinations, lead to a finale where the melodic and harmonic elements come closer, continuously imitating each other and becoming more and more similar, until everything overlaps in different scales.

The incommunicability between different cultures and worlds and the confusion that this generates lie at the heart of this work: the fanfare-like themes that characterise the introduction, together with the "Arabian" melodies of the Presto, represent these differences. The bare theme of the Andante, while offering a glimpse of hope, also describes the impossibility of a meeting and the pain this situation causes. The empty fifth and dissonance of the minor second are elements that feature throughout this work. In the Coda, moreover, all these ideas reappear "kaleidoscopically", amidst a convulsive and excitingly chaotic atmosphere.

OLD SETTLERS' PICNIC is a is a four-movement suite for Band by Eric Ewazen, arranged by Virginia Allen; each movement is published separately. Composed with high school performers in mind, the suite was inspired by an 1890s photograph and descriptions of a Wisconsin town's "Old Settlers" celebration. AFTERNOON GAMES are depicted with a Vivace scherzo in 6/8. The running and skipping leads to an extended fugue for a copycat game before returning to the opening theme.

James Rae is the man who put fun into woodwind and brass teaching. His many compositions, especially in the jazz and blues idioms, have often featured on examination syllabuses.
