Hymn to the Sun - Satoshi Yagisawa
Commissioned by Tokai City Wind Music Band for their 40th anniversary celebration. The y gave the composer a difficult theme, that is: For 40 years we did our activity as if we were a family. We had new experiences, welcoming new members, supporting and help ing one another, sometimes having troubles. Through these experiences, the band became our Sun. With the piece, we would like to express our enthusiusm of progress, taking over the early members' will. The composer used to join in a school band, so he stron gly agreed with the theme, but composing is another hard thing to do. He decided to dr op on the band almost everytime he went to Nagoya, and promoted friendship with them, which led him copose this piece.

Incandescent Sky - Robert Sheldon
This sparkling concert overture commemorates the 30th anniversary of the First Coast Wind Symphony. An opening majestic fanfare leads to a buoyant main theme in 12/8 time. A lyrical contrasting section is as rich in melodic content as it is passion. The piece, being in a modified rondo form restates a variation of the main theme before returning to the opening fanfare and a rousing conclusion.

Written as a commission by the Stichting de Inrichting foundation of Wijk bij Duurstede (the Netherlands), Rob Goorhuis Requiem voor de mens (Requiem for Man) on lyrics by Andr van Zwieten was composed in the year 2001. This work for choir andwind-band greatly impressed the audience, whilst its composer remained obsessed by its war theme. When he subsequently heard that the Rundfunk Blasorchester from the German town of Leipzig -a place not far from Colditz - was to dedicate a CDto his work, Rob Goorhuis got the idea to process some of the themes from his Requiem for Man into an instrumental composition about the famous Colditz castle. a place still bearing the scars of war. From 1933 to 1934, the castle was aSchutzhaftlager. During the Second World War, it was used as a prison for senior officers. From this prison, many escapes were undertaken, which even resulted in the castle being nicknamed The Escape School. In the seventies, a television-seriesabout this period made the castle very well-known with the public at large.The despondent tone of the opening theme underscores the sadness caused by wars and violence. Nevertheless the works ending is hopeful and triumphant. Peace iscelebrated, but with the hope for a lasting peace sadly remaining a topical issue to the present moment.

Sinfonietta No. 1 was originally written for brass band, commissioned by the Dutch National Championships 2011 in Groningen. It also served as the test piece for the Swiss National Championships 2011 in Montreux, Switzerland. In 2012, Johan de Meij created this version for wind orchestra.Unlike most of Johan de Meij's compositions, Sinfonietta No. 1 is an abstract, non-programmatic work. It consists of three movements, in which the thematic material of the opening measures - an upward fifth jump - returns in various shapes and forms throughout the piece. The slow middle section features solo passages by cello, English horn and bassoon, all starting with thesame fifth jump. The final movement presents an Elgar-like march theme, interspersed with quotes from the second movement, and ending with the opening theme of movement I.

Pleasure for Band - Kees Schoonenbeek
As the title suggests Pleasure for Band is a pleasant composition it is based in five equal parts. The first movement makes use of A-B-A form, with the A theme having a bright joyous character and the B theme having a contrastingmore lyrical feel. This work will make an idea encore for any concert.

Railroad Ramble - Peter Kleine Schaars
This composition was commissioned by the Concert Band of the NS (the Dutch railroad company) and is intended as an opening piece, bringing the band and the audience on track for an exciting concert! The ascending chords over theostinato bass of the introduction represent the energetic pulling away of the train. The main theme in 10/8 time makes one drift away in the rhythm of full speed. The clownish middle section reflects the seemingly disorderlyactivity in a station hall during rush hour. This is followed by a reprise of the main theme and the introduction, which brings this fascinating musical rail journey to an end.

The Quest for Victory sets to music the adventures of a superhero who is locked in an eternal struggle against the forces of evil. The piece begins with the statement of the superhero's theme. We then hear such emotions as jealousy, resentment and hatred, and witness a fierce battle but again and again--and with a happy ending--the majestic hero's theme sounds. Commissioned by the Cabarrus All-County Middle School Band (Concord, North Carolina), this work was inspired by the composer's Irish heritage and the rich history of Ireland. With three main themes, this programmatic work openswith a peaceful sunrise with mist rising from the bog. The second theme describes the great hall of a majestic medieval castle, complete with vibrant colors and pageantry. The exciting battle theme follows and ultimately resolvesto a return of the earlier themes. A wonderfully effective setting for beginning players! Dur: 3:10
