Often this happiness can be tinged with sadness (we can cry with joy, after all) and it is this conflict of emotions which this piece describes. A four-part choir part in English has been added which can be used ad lib. or you can also opt for singing the melody line only, for example with a soloist and/or the congregation. This work was commissioned by Dr. Robert Oertli from Mhlin, Switzerland, and is based on an earlier composition called Spirit of the Sequoia. The piece is inspired by how the human spirit can gain from setbacks: we become stronger after adversity. Sparke used the Californian redwood tree as a metaphor for this basic idea. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground, which require heat to open their shells and germinate; the seeds require destruction in order to procreate. This piece is particularly suitable for younger bands - one of the last wishes of the initial commissioner.

£84.50The Spirit of an Eagle - Larry Clark
This is one of Larry Clark's most successful and performed pieces. It is a standard overture with a glorious slower B section, and is already on the required music lists for many states (including Texas and Florida). Now it can be performed by a band with instrumentation problems in this new flexible scoring edition. As few as five players and percussion can perform a full-sounding version of this wonderful work. To prove it, we recorded an excerpted version of the piece where we did just that.

The Spirit Within - Les Taylor
A moving chorale introduces this work that quickly explodes into a lively exchange between the different wind choirs and sectional voices. A good timpanist is required in the transition section that features the percussion and winds in a heated exchange. The low brass are featured at different times, with a rollicking trombone glissando at the end of the coda.

From a simple hymn-like opening, the piece builds relentlessly to an intense and inspiring finale. James L. Hosay is one of the modern concert band's literature's great composers of melody. So often modern band pieces are built upon a couple of simple ostinato figures at the expense of any real extended thematic material. Itis indeed refreshing and rewarding to have a beautiful melody to play. Play it!
