Goldene Kameraden - James Barnes
"Goldene Kameraden" was commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Musikverlag RUNDEL. The title of the piece is a combination of the golden anniversary of the company and all my friends who work there - but it is also a humorous pun on one of my favorite German marches: "Alte Kameraden". Although marches are rather out of favor in the U.S. these days - unless they are by John Philip Sousa - I love to write them. And so I was happy to have the opportunity to compose this for Thomas Rundel, his family and the team at Musikverlag RUNDEL. The strict form of marches and the necessary march-like clichs required may seem restricting to other composers, but I perceive this as a musical challenge. It is like completing a crossword puzzle: one must go by all the traditional rules" but still produce something creative.

"Fanfares and Fantasies" was commissioned by Strindheim Janitsjar for their 40th Anniversary in 2019. The commission was supported by The Composers' Remuneration Fund.With the title "Fanfares and Fantasies", I try to accommodate both the extroverted (represented by fanfares and celebration), with the quiet and introverted in the small interludes I call fantasies.The solitary flute in the fantasies symbolizes something that is very far from brass fanfares, but still, I believe that by this, both the band and the music emerge with even greater depth. And by this span, the music's ability to accommodate all nuances emerges.- Stig Nordhagen

This whole creates something larger than just the two individual constituents, a new entity. Rendezvous was commissioned by Krohnengen Brass Band for their 50th Anniversary in 2019. This version for Concert Band was scored autumn 2020.Rendezvous is devided into three sections. Each section are referring to Edvard Grieg's own titles. but twisted, to make sure that everybody understand that this music is a mash-up of themes Edvard Grieg used in opus 54 (for piano) and opus 61 (songs for children).1. Trolltog med avsporing (March of the Trolls derailment)March of the Trolls is a famous part of Edvard Grieg lyric pieces, opus 54.2. Klokkeklang i feil sang (Bell ringing in wrong tune).Bell ringing show that Grieg was one of the first composers to write the way impressionists did. What happens if this beatiful piece is combined with several other themes from the same book? It somehow works in its own way.3. Pep talk til Blakken (Pep talk to Blakken)The riff used in the first part becomes an important part of the third part: a funky treat of the childrens song "Kveldssang for Blakken" (Evening song for Blakken).I felt that a rather tired old horse needed a pep talk more than a slow tune. So that is why you get this music(!) - and this is how my rendezvous with Grieg ends.Not sure what maestro Grieg would have thougt... But, I have read that the fiddlers that played the tunes Grieg used was not happy with the way Grieg used them.So there you go...Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

I composed Axis as a dedication to my friend Shinya Nakamitsu. He is a wonderful graphic designer who loves wind band music. Some years ago, I made a demo CD to hand out to a number of people. He oversaw the jacket design for that project and I composed this traditional march to thank him. Shinya Nakamitsu runs a design company called AXIS: hence the name of the composition.

An arrangement for wind band of Purcell's haunting Dido's Lament. This arrangement was made in the period of national mourning following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. I needed something as a reflective concert piece and chose to arrange Dido's Lament - the aria "When I am laid in earth" from the opera Dido and Aeneas by the English composer Henry Purcell (1659-1695). There have been various versions of this beautiful song from Stokowski's lush orchestration to Annie Lennox's more lateral slant. While not wanting to try and completely emulate the original, I did not want to stray too far from it. Purcell's style of Baroque music was uniquely English and, for the theoretically minded, this aria makes exemplary use of the passus duriusculus in the ground bass.- Rob WiffinDuration: 3.30

A solo for solo clarinet and band featuring the well-known tune from Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik. I have always thought that Woody Herman's Golden Wedding is a great showpiece for clarinet. He takes a tune entitled La Cinquantaine by the French Romantic composer Jean Gabriel-Marie (1852 - 1928) and sets it as a big band swing piece complete with Krupa Toms. In seeking to emulate it I suddenly realised that the Rondo from Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik K.525 had very much the same character if I presented it in a minor key. It was then really just a matter of organizing the various sections, setting them in a swing manner and adding a cadenza-like passage. There is, of course, a strong connection between Mozart and the clarinet. It was fun to write and will hopefully be a fun solo vehicle for clarinettists. - Rob Wiffin. Duration: 3.30

In 1969 I was teaching music at Cranleigh School in Surrey. I was asked to write a work for the orchestra and produced a four-movement piece entitled Concerto for School Orchestra. I have now reworked the music for wind band and re-titled it Perchance to Dream. the piece has a slow introduction followed by a loose sonata form movement in which the introductory material is reintroduced.
