    Spirit Of ?44 - Cotter

Toward the end of WWII, both sides had amassed a great number of POW's. These people were used as labor to build roads and bridges. To keep moral high, the POW's made up songs that were sung or whistled. These tunes made the work go faster and were used to communicate messages. The "Spirit of '44" was written in honor of those valiant men and women. Try whistling the melody. It might raise your spirits, too.

Dream, Imagine, Live - Larry Clark

The inspiration for this piece comes from one of Henry David Thoreau's most famous quotes - Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined. It was Thoreau's vision that we contemplate a simpler life and be deep thinkers about what we want our lives to be. The piece is divided into three distinct sections based on the same three-note motive. The first section is intense and bold, the second is introspective and lyrical and the third is dance-like, almost reminiscent of a Celtic folk song, in lilting in 6/8. This perfect contest or festival selection will highlight your band's strengths.

Space Probe - James L. Hosay

Now your band can boldly go where no band has gone before, and bring the "final frontier" to your concert band stage! Here's James L. Hosay's imaginative new tone poem SPACE PROBE. The data sent to Earth by these probes, along with recent photos and information gathered by the orbital telescope, Hubble, has helped astronomers chart the ever-expanding universe all the way back to its origins. This composition provides excellent opportunities for cross-curriculum teaching withscience. A scintillating musical spacescape ushers in the bold thematic statement in the Trumpets and Alto Saxophones. French Horns join in thrilling variation. A boundless contrasting espressivo theme soars through to the reprise of the initial ideas. Explore SPACE PROBE with your band this year. Inspiring!

Three Holiday Scenes - Timothy Johnson

An imaginative look at a good old-fashioned Christmas! From aromas of family favorites cooking in the kitchen, to the images of decorated trees, snow scenes, and caroling - all are a part of that wonderful celebration.Rather than just taking the same old Public Domain Christmas carols for one more go 'round, Timothy Johnson has composed the majority of THREE HOLIDAY SCENES using fresh and original melodies. The first scene opens with fragments of "Oh Tannenbaum" but quickly moves into a beautiful Christmas waltz. An "effets de neige," or "Snowfall effect," carries the luscious second and contrasting scene. In the 3rd and final scene, the phrases from well-known carols mergewith one another, creating the effect of "caroling." Finally, melodies serve as counterpoint for one another and bring this delightful vignette to a close. This piece presents an excellent opportunity to work with the Art department in creating drawings and paintings of holiday images. Pull your chair a little closer to the fireplace and sit back for a winsome holiday treat!
