River Trail Expedition - Robert Sheldon
Written for the Streator High School Band in Illinois, is named for the Hopalong Cassidy River Trail that winds along the banks of the Vermilion River. The trail borrows its name from the Hopalong Cassidy series of books, written by Streator native Clarence E. Mulford. This concert overture has an energetic drive which is enhanced by punctuated rhythms and edgy dissonances that contrast with the lyrical and tuneful melodies found throughout the piece. December Joy
Arranged by Douglas E. Wagner, three well-known secular carol tunes are showcased in this big and brassy, bright and flashy seasonal extravaganza, especially suited as a concert opener. Beginning with a cascade of chimes, soaring woodwind runs, and bold brass lines, "Deck the Hall" and "Here We Come A-Caroling" are presented with dynamic flair, interspersed with brief fanfare-like episodes. The mood transitions to a jaunting sleigh ride across the winter landscape, partnering the second time through with "Jingle Bells," as the spirited celebration closes with a short coda, drawn from musical materials heard in the opening measures of the work. (2:55) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

American River Medley
The major rivers which flow through the United States of America have centuries-long been prime vehicles for exploration, trade, inspiration, life, and general enjoyment for millions of people. Folk songs from the mid-nineteenth century chronicle their stories of love and courage, with three of the most beloved of these tunes incorporated into the fabric of this arrangement by Douglas E. Wagner. Opening with a gently flowing treatment of "Shenandoah," also known as "Across the Wide Missouri," the work transitions to a spirited rendition of "The Glendy Burk." A more sedate feeling for "Red River Valley" follows, with "Shenandoah" returning again in the upper winds in direct and effective counterpoint. A rousing coda, based on previously heard musical material, brings to a close this celebration of our most treasured American resources. (2:50)

An Irish Tale
Based on the folk song While History's Muse, this delightful arrangement in 3/4 has all the characteristics of a lighthearted Irish dance. A tambourine and clarinet drone set the stage for the flute melody that is eventually passed throughout the ensemble. A key change to E builds until the piece returns to the lighthearted style of the opening one last time. Great writing for young bands!
