In early December 2011, a powerful wind storm passed through Southern California, leaving thousands without electricity and severe damage to many mature trees. Written during this event, this piece uses sharply syncopated rhythms, the key of C minor and prominent percussion to convey the mood that prevailed during the storm. Preludes and overtures were often written to set the mood of Viennese folk plays and therefore might be used for more than one production. Such was the case for Poet and Peasant, which introduced a comedy of the that name in 1846. The piece had already been heard as the overture to the play Lots of money, short of sleep and may also have prefaced two other plays. This overture did not belong to an opera until several years after its 1845 composition date. The themes from this overture are among the most often quoted material for comic effects for stage productions and animated cartoons. Probably, they represent, in sound, an era of nostalgia from the old-time park band concerts and are familiar to audiences of all age groups. In 'A Summer Holiday' Patrick Millstone takes us with him on a journey. After a year's hard work we may finally enjoy a well-earned holiday. The first part of this three-part composition has the appropriate title 'On Tour'. When we chose our holiday destination, the brochure said that it would be bathed in sunlight every day. Unfortunately, this turns out not to be the case. Somewhat melancholically, we play round games in our summer house on a 'Rainy Day'. "Some kind of Dj Vu" is a continuation of the piece "Time for Celebration", written for Sreide & Sandsli Skolekorps's (SSS) Junior Band in 2015.The theme and motif is based on the band's initials "SSS", three similar tones (translated to the sheet music).The motif is played either separately as a signal, or as the beginning of the main melody.The title refers to the term 'Dj Vu', which is a feeling of having experienced something in the past (which one actually experiences for the first time).In this case, it's the musical and thematic reference to "Time for Celebration" that appears as the "Dj Vu" experience.

"Maasai Masala" is a virtuoso band piece based on "Ol Doinyo Lengai", a duet for vibraphone and marimba. The music draws inspiration from the rhythms and tonalities from both African and Indian music and has chamber music qualities in the slower middle section.The piece has optional extra percussion parts in prioritised order in case enough percussionists are available or in occasion of including young aspiring talents.Ol Doinyo Lengai is the name of an active volcano in Tanzania, the name meaning The Mountain of God. The piece depicts the volcano in its physical form and also describes the underlying tension in the expectation og future eruptions. The characteristic vertical jumping-dance is represented in the repetitive 9/8 pattern.

Les Marteaux de La Marine was composed in 1999 as a commission by the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The composition contains three static elements which interchange. Static in this case means that development of the material isnot pursued (by the composer). The first element with which the piece begins is tranquil and colourful. The second element is sharp and incisive, while the third expresses energy. In all elements a repeated tone is the starting point whichexplains the hammers in the works title.The instrumentation is richly variegated with a harp also determining the palette of colours in the slower movements. The composition opens with an atmospheric Larghetto containing fine harmonies in thesoft and subtly moving wood-winds. The introduction breathes an impressionistic atmosphere in which expressive cantilenas and soloistic agile motifs stand out. A strong setting is followed by an Allegro virtuoso containing fast motifs contrasted withshort and rhythmic stars of the various instrumental sections. Trumpets and horns add a virtuoso bugle-call motif. After a short stringendosection, the transparent Larghetto returns with a varied setting of the opening elements. The beautifulleading roles in this section are reserved for cornet (trumpet) and horn. Subsequently, the flashing Vivo starts with continuous movements in triplets from both wood-winds and brass. Next, the opening Allegro re-appears once again and thus LesMarteaux de la Marine ends with a fast and virtuoso climax. Les Marteaux de La Marine was selected as a compulsory grade 6 contest piece for symphonic bands in the Netherlands.
