These rather unusual instruments start this composition called The Introduction, though it could be considered as a real concert piece. The life of the Austrian empress Elisabeth (1837-1898) which started as a fairy tale but ended as a tragedy, inspired the librettist Michael Kunze and the composer Silvester Levay to write a musical based on the life of the popular 'Sissi'. The musical was premiered in Vienna on 3 September 1992 and was very successful for many years. The story is told by Luigi Lucheni, Elisabeth's murderer. So death, represented by a mysterious and seductive young man, is omnipresent throughout the musical. Several songs have become hits and, of course, you can hear them in this fine selection by Peter Kleine Schaars who gathered various music and dance styles such as the rock shuffle, the jazz waltz and the classical Viennese waltz.

'The Road to Mandalay' has been a kind of oriental symbol, which was also used in literature, e.g. by Rudyard Kipling. Robie Williams made a song with the same name and in July 2000 it reached the top of the international hit parade. Peter Goosensen (1967) studied the trombone, the euphonium and wind band conducting at the conservatories of music of Alkmaar and Amsterdam. This is an excellent lively piece of swing music with a lot of nice effects. Peter Goosensen succeeded in writing a rather easy composition yet full of spirit. No doubt, many young listeners in the audience will fancy to 'join the band'!

Gustav Holst (Cheltenham, 1874 - London, 1934) was of the very first great British composers of classical music to write some valuable original compositions for symphonic band. Holst composed operas, choral works and splendid compositions for symphony orchestra. He got famous with his opus 32, the seven part suite "The Planets" composed between 1914 and 1917. The first complete public performance was given in 1920. The first part, "Mars, the war bringer" was written just before the outburst of the First World War. Geert Schrijvers wrote this fine arrangement for symphonic band, organ and two harps.

We start our trip in Wallony, the French speaking part of Belgium where folk music is having a big revival nowadays. A solo cornet invites us with a classic opening as a little promenade to the dance, always accompanied by a tenor drum. Some instruments join but the cornet ends up alone. When the euphoniums present their more up tempo 'quasi Celtic jig' all groups dance together towards the end. Now and then syncopated counterrhytms occur in accompanying parts.The 1st theme is from the manuscript of Franois-Joseph Jamin (early 19th century).
