Legacy - Sean O'Loughlin
Composer Sean O'Loughlin has already produced a great deal of exceptional pieces for developing students that will leave a legacy to educators for years to come. Originally written as part of the Commissioned Works for School Bands sponsored by Carl Fischer on the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the firm, Ginger Marmalade has become one of the best known of serious twentieth-century works for school band. A humorous program number that plays with the listener's expectations, it is technically simple, but uses unusual sound resources (clapping hands, rapping heels, novel percussion sounds) o produce a work that delights the ear and challenges the mind. Often cited as a cornerstone of the young band repertoire (it is on both the UIL - Texas and NYSSMA required music lists), we are pleased to issue this delightful pieceas part of our Carl Fischer Classic Band Edition.

The Masks - Ronald Lo Presti
The Masks was composed in 1955 as a two movement orchestral suite that was part of the American Composers' Edition series produced by Eastman in conjunction with Carl Fischer music publishers. Lo Presti, a student of Howard Hanson is perhaps best known for his Elegy for a Young American written for concert band. Indeed, The Masks is reminiscent of the Elegy in its romantic style with rich contemporary harmonies. There is no programmatic significance to the title, according to Lo Presti, other than the fact that the two movements are in contrasting moods, much like the Greek masks of comedy and drama. Gregory Rudgers transcription is authentic to the orginal piece and gives bandseverywhere a new LoPresti piece of significance.

Ascendance - Robert Thurston
A dynamic concert overture that derives most of its force and material from the striking fanfare motive announced in the opening measure by horns and trumpets (concert Eb, Bb, Ab, Db). The bold opening in compound time is followed by a suave and flowing Adagio in 4/4 meter that makes a lovely tune out of a variant of the opening motive. At measure 103, with a marimba solo, the Allegro style and compound meter return for a rousing and invigorating climax. Bandanna Overture - Daron Aric Hagen
Bandanna is the extraordinary opera commissioned by a consortium of 79 members of the College Band Directors National Association, and premiered at the CBDNA convention in Austin, TX on February 28, 1999. This overture is not a part of the opera, but an independent concert work created by the composer for concert performance. A brilliantly scored composition, that has already been adopted by the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List, Overture to "Bandanna" features many musical ideas from the opera including the wonderful melody that brings audiences to their feet.
