O Come, All Ye Faithful (originally written in Latin as Adeste Fideles ) is a Christmas carol that has been attributed to various authors, including St. Bonaventure in the 13th century or King John IV of Portugal in the 17th, though it was more commonly believed that the text was written by Cistercian monks - the German, Portuguese or Spanish provinces of that order having at various times been credited. In modern English hymnals the text is usually credited to John Francis Wade, whose name appears on the earliest printed versions. A manuscript by Wade, dating to 1751, is held by Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. The version published by Wade consisted of four Latin verses. But later in the 18th century, the French Catholic priest Jean-Francois-tienne Borderies wrote an additional three verses in Latin; these are normally printed as the third to fifth of seven verses. O come, all ye faithful ranks as one of the most popular Christmas carols ever written, and the descant by David Willcocks has become famous the world over. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.

He wanted to try and write a reasonably extended piece of minimalism but make the necessary rhythmic shifts by means of accents across the bar rather than continually changing the metre. Hence the ear picks up a lot of patterns of 5 that are actually placed across an even beat of 2. Without necessarily trying for a dark atmosphere the piece naturally evolved in that mood. Down by the riverside is a spiritual that was sung by slaves in the South as a work song. It dates back to before the American Civil War. John Rutter's lively arrangement of this barnstorming American folk-song builds up from a quiet opening to a triumphant conclusion. This arrangement is a faithful adaptation of the original orchestration for chorus and orchestra, but it is arranged so that it may be performed by band alone. The style is an authentic toe-tapping early jazz creation that relates to the 'jitterbug' era, and the band arrangement is complete with an optional jazz clarinet solo as well as a rousing chorus by the sax section. The piano part is cued if needed. This is a perfect opportunity to get the entire band 'swinging', and could even entice a 'One mo' time!' finale.

The Crucifixion, an oratorio composed by John Stainer in 1887 was designed in such a way that most church choirs would find it accessible. Also, it helpfully includes five hymns so that the congregation can contribute also. Whilst the text for this work was written by W J Sparrow Simpson, who worked with Stainer in an earlier work entitled 'Mary Magdalene', that used in this setting of 'God, so loved the world' is literal from John 3 verse 16 in the scriptures. This movement of 'The Crucifixion' is the most popular and widely used.
