    Pavane - Hans Vansant

In Pavane, the base line, which runs throughout the entire piece, forms the leitmotiv. This special work unfurls slowly and is based on chords that are reminiscent of Bach or Scarlatti. Towards the middle, it builds up a climax that disappears in exactly the same manner as it began.

    Norwegian Overture - Traditional

It is not entirely sure where the melody originates that forms the basis for Norwegian Overture. Most sources point in the direction of a certain J.H. Nebelong in about 1881. It is also possible that he was the first to note down this traditional melody and put his name to it.The lyrics are by a certain A.H. Brorson and were set to the music at a later date. The original title is "store hvide flok", which means "the big white herd". Several composers have used this theme, including Edvard Grieg and the Danish Carl Nielsen.

Dance of the Seven Veils from Salome - Richard Strauss

Oscar Wilde, author of Salome, described the scene simply as "Salome dances seven veils' dance." Though the goal is seduction of her stepfather King Herod, Salome's actions aren't overtly erotic, at least initially. A manic introduction in the score is halted by the dancer, who begins again with a languid, deliberate act of attrition, as the orchestra presents heavily ornamented long tones, interspersed with waltzes and teasing melismas. Salome's tempo gradually increases as she sheds her veils in a final frenzy, then collapses as though in exhaustion. After a moment's pause, she rises again to throw herself at Herod's feet in triumph. An arrangement of Salome was commissioned by Tsuman Junior High School Wind Orchestra for use at the All Japan Band Competition. That version was two thirds of this work; the remaining third was too technical for use at that time. This full version was completed for a recording by the Ground Self Defense Force Central Band for the Brain Company/Bravo Music CD "New Arrangement Collections Vol. 8."(Kazuhiro Morita)

Gloriosa - Symphonic Poem for Band (Complete) - Yasuhide Ito

A new acquisition by Bravo Music, this fresh printing of the 1990 masterwork by Yasuhide Ito features a newly engraved score, improved parts, good availability and value. This stirring and powerful homage to early Christianity in Japan profoundly and eloquently states the case of cross-cultural conflict and resolution.I. OratioThe Gregorian chant "Gloriosa" begins with the words, "O gloriosa Domina excelsa super sidera que te creavit provide lactasti sacro ubere." The first movement Oratio opens with bells sounding the hymn's initial phrases. The movement as a whole evokes the fervent prayers and suffering of the Crypto-Christians.II. CantusIII. Dies FestusCommissioned in 1989 and premiered in 1990 by the Sasebo Band of the Maritime Self-Defense Force of Kyushu, southern Japan.Gloriosa is inspired by the songs of the Kakure-Kirishitan (Crypto-Christians) of Kyushu who continued to practice their faith surreptitiously after the ban of Christianity, which had been introduced to that southern region in the mid-16th century by Roman Catholic missionary Francisco Xavier. The worship brought with it a variety of western music.Though Christianity was proscribed in 1612 by authority of the Tokugawa Shogunate in Edo (today Tokyo), Kakure-Kirishitan continued advocating sermons and disguised songs. Melodies and lyrics such as Gregorian chant were obliged to be "Japanized". For example, the Latin word "Gloriosa" was changed to "Gururiyoza." This adaptation of liturgy for survival inspired Ito to write this piece in order to reveal and solve this unique cultural mystery. The composer explains:"Nagasaki district in Kyushu region continued to accept foreign culture even during the seclusion period, as Japan's only window to the outer world. After the proscription of Christianity, the faith was preserved and handed down in secret in the Nagasaki and Shimabara areas of Kyushu region. My interest was piqued by the way in which the Latin words of Gregorian chants were gradually `Japanized' during the 200 years of hidden practice of the Christian faith. That music forms the basis of Gloriosa."Gloriosa, fusing Gregorian chant and Japanese folk music, displays the most sophisticated counterpoint yet found in any Japanese composition for wind orchestra.

Give Us This Day - David Maslanka

A short, two-movement symphony by the masterful David Maslanka, that demonstrates once again the rich possibilities of the wind band in the hands of a composer who understands the creative potential of the medium. The slow and richly scored opening movement makes especially fine use of an expanded percussion section, triadic harmony and melodies with the flavor of an incantation. The second movement is a driving Allegro with a stern, striding C minor theme that dominates the movement until the coda, which ends the piece with a slow, heaven-storming chorale. Despite the title (from The Lord's Prayer), the composer claims a Buddhist inspiration for his piece.
