    Soul Divine - Peter Meechan

From the Gelinas family:"David Gelinas was a grade 10 student at Dr. Martin LeBoldus Catholic High School in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. On May 2, 1992, he was tragically killed in a car accident. David was an accomplishedtenor saxophone playerand member of the LeBoldus Concert Band, multiple Jazz Bands and the Regina Lions Junior Band. He dreamt of a future in music at McGill University. In the 25 years since his death, David's family and friends have embraced life, the importance of family, and a love of music. This piece is dedicated to the memory our son, brother, uncle, student, and friend, David Gelinas. Always in our hearts and minds, David's love of music plays on."Chad Huel, Director of Bands at LeBoldus Catholic High School, Regina, Saskatchewan, approached me to write a new work for the school's symphonic band in memory of his friend, David Gelinas. Chad spoke of his friend's love of music and life, the time they spent together, his skills as a tenor saxophonist, and how his life was cut so tragically short. Before writing this piece, I was reading the William Blake poem Auguries of Innocence. Contained in that poem were the following words, which seemed so beautifully poignant and appropriate, and hopefully encapsulates something about grief, as well as celebration of life."Joy & Woe are woven fineA Clothing for the soul divineUnder every grief & pineRuns a joy with silken twine"Soul Divine is dedicated to Chad Huel and the Gelinas family, in memory of David Gelinas.

New World Sketches - Dan Price

New World Sketches is a descriptive journey through the landscapes and images of America in the early part of the 20th century. The images and caricatures chosen epitomize all that is the ‘New World', and the musical language draws upon influences of sound and technique that American composers have introduced into the musical vocabulary.SidewalkThe work opens with a busy street scene of 1930's New York, and the hustle and bustle of the city can be heard through percussive scoring of car hooters, trams and pedestrians going about their business, featuring elements of George Gershwin's American In Paris and Rhapsody in Blue. There is the sound of a Broadway show, a glimpse of a ‘Tom and Jerry' cartoon and the smokey sounds of Harlem. The Deep SouthAs the subtitle suggests, the second movement of New World Sketches evokes images of the 1890's Deep South beginning with a simple spiritual. Played first on unaccompanied solo euphonium the melody is then joined by bass trombone, depicting a slave "work song". An increase in tempo and a resounding tubular bell announces the arrival of a steam locomotive complete with "Love Chime" whistle.RodeoThe final movement steers away from the jazz influences synonymous in America's musical history and turns towards the music of Aaron Copland for inspiration. The opening unison tune, played on piccolo, flutes, oboe, bassoon, tenor sax, trumpet and trombone accompanied by extensive poly-chords, creates a big-country sound while the fast pseudo-Irish Jig provides the energy and flair of a rodeo.New World Sketches is conceived as a single work however each movement works independently if so desired.

CLOCKWISE (Prelude Concert Band) - Cowles, Colin

The percussion in CLOCKWISE represents the ticking or winding of a clock and should, therefore, be as rhythmic as possible. Other 'clock' effects could be added, such as a scraper on the first beat of each bar and even a cuckoo or alarm bell at the end. Titles in the 'Prelude Series' are specifically scored for bands with few, if any, bass instruments but will sound well on larger ensembles. The bass line is playable by any combination of bass clarinet, bassoon, baritone saxophone, trombone, euphonium or tuba; in the event that none of these is available, the part for trombone/euphonium (B flat TC) can be played by tenor saxophone. The tuned percussion part is entirely optional and can be played by any available instrument(s). Each piece also includes a preliminary exercise. This is always in the same key as the accompanying piece and consists of a scale and chord progression that can be used for improving ensemble, balance, intonation and instrumental facility by changing tempo, articulation and dynamics. Duration: 1:40

COOL DUDE (Prelude Concert Band) - Barry, Darrol

COOL DUDE needs controlled playing to achieve the 'laid back' feel. It is not necessary for everyone to do the finger clicks at the start - accuracy is more important than quantity! MUMBO JUMBO (Prelude Concert Band) - Sparke, Philip

MUMBO JUMBO is a piece with a Latin American flavour though not specifically in any of the recognised dance styles. The first percussion part can be elaborated if additional players and instruments are available: bongos, tambourine and claves will help here. Dynamics play an important part in this piece and should be carefully graded.
