With Fire and Sword (from 'For England, Harry and St. George') (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Gorb, Adam

The little pieces that form 'For England, Harry and St. George' may be played individually, in pairs, scattered through a programme or, when given complete, may even be played in a different order. All take their inspiration from the music of mediaeval and renaissance Britain, the scene of political intrigue, social turmoil and military strife. Performers should keep in mind the combination of vigour, mysticism and grandeur which so characterised English music of this bygone age. AB grade 2 - 2.5Duration:01:30

Mystic Journey (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sheldon, Robert

Mystic Journey features a dark and ominous opening that leads to a very rhythmic and jungle-like dance. The scoring brings out wonderful colors that even young bands can express. The initial theme reappears before the dance rhythms once again take over, concluding the piece with a burst of energy. Duration: 2.45

Roman Times (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Fraser, Bruce

During a visit to the town of Saintes in South West France in the summer of 2003, I spent some time in the Roman amphitheatre there. It is a well preserved arena and I imagined what it must have been like to take part in the gladiatorial games. 'Roman times' is based on these images with the opening grand procession and its amazing mixture of Mediterranean peoples. The middle movement is an old fashioned love ballad followed by gladiators fighting in a very spirited battle to death or victory.

Named for the uninhabited island off the North Carolina coast where wild horses still roam, this energetic original features a distinct western flavor with strong themes and solid scoring throughout. Korean Hill Song (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Williams, Mark

The beautiful, well-known folk song "Arirang" is featured in this creative adaptation by Mark Williams. Colourful percussion writing and solos for alto saxophone and flute help to establish the tone of this very interesting arrangement. John Barnes Chance also used this folk song, named for Arirang Hill, near Seoul, in the concert band classic Variation on a Korean Folk Song. Take advantage of this great opportunity for younger musicians to experience this amazing melody! Duration: 2.30

Elisabeth (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Levay & Kunze - De Meij, Johan

The world premiere of the musical Elisabeth took place in Vienna on September 3, 1992. From the great acclaim with which the musical was received, it became clear that the life of the Empress of Austria still appeals to the imagination. Although Elisabeth's life (1837-1898) as an Empress has a fairy-tale-like beginning, it takes a gloomy turn. In this production, Luigi Lucheni, the man who finally takes her life, tells her story. Death plays a major role throughout Elisabeth's life. In the musical, an equally mysterious and attractive man portrays the phenomenon of death, seducing her to the realm of death time after time. Elisabeth's life resembles a fairy tale when she marries the Emperor Franz Joseph at the age of sixteen. Her mother-in-law, Archduchess Sophie, does not make it easy on Elisabeth. But it is life itself that puts the Empress to the test. First, her youngest daughter dies. Then, not long after her son Rudolf is born, her happiness is clouded when her mother-in-law decides she must take pity on him. After her husband's unfaithfulness and Sophie's death, Elisabeth is so disillusioned that she chooses a travelling existence without realizing her husband and her son, Rudolf, miss her. Rudolf's loneliness is one of the reasons he commits suicide. The accumulation of disappointments in Elisabeth's life almost drives her into the arms of Death. In the end, however, it is Lucheni who kills her.Duration: 8.30

Tribute to Dixie (Dixie Ensemble with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Tinner, Gilbert

This scintillating work was written as a tribute to the jazz musicians of the New Orleans, Dixieland and Chicago styles of the 20s and 30s. It consists of an opening swing section in true Dixieland style, followed by a sleazy blues section. Ideally the band should be divided so there is a separate Dixieland band consisting of trumpet, clarinet, alto or tenor saxophone, trombone, banjo (optional) and tuba or double bass. Although the Dixieland band are mostly accompanied by the remainder of the concert band the accompanying players also get the chance to shine as every now and again they take over the musical themes.Duration: 6.15

Tokyo 2000 (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - O'Reilly, John

Tokyo 2000 begins with a haunting pentatonic flute passage, which is immediately answered by tom-toms and timpani that evoke the sounds of the classic drums of Kyoto. Stark brass pyramids and fluid woodwind passages set the stage for the exciting "Allegro," combining pentatonic melodies with contemporary polychords and interesting syncopated rhythms. A chorale-style middle section showcases the brass, only to lead back to the main theme and a rousing coda to bring the work to a magnificent finish. Let John O'Reilly take you and your band to Tokyo on your next concert! Duration: 5.45
