These dances display Tchaikovskys remarkable grasp of symphonic writing and are among the very best of his dance sequences. Carefully transcribed for band, they are taken from the opera "The Oprichnik." The Oprichnik were the personal bodyguards of Tsar Ivan the Terrible.
