As The Last Light Fades - Jeremy Bell
"As The Last Light Fades" is a programmatic work, capturing the gradual shift when the sunset gives way to a brief moment of twilight, and the stars begin to take their place in the heavens waiting for darkness to blanket the sky. As the sun starts to descend beyond the horizon, a light rainfall plays percussively on the leaves hanging above. The music conveys the feeling of peace and tranquility that one can only really experience in nature, an ethereal and almost transcendent connection, undisturbed by the disruptions of the modern world.

Fanfares in Remembrance - Peadar Townsend
Fanfares in Remembrance was commissioned by Nick Jarvis, Principal conductor of the Band of the Royal British Legion, Christchurch, Dorset, UK to be premiered during the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium on May 27th, 2017. The work is a short reflection two World War One bugle calls, 'The General Salute' and 'Retreat' or 'Sunset' as it is also known. The significance and symbolism of bugle calls from this era are well known and they are still used in Barracks across the world. I have used sections of these famous British bugle calls on two trumpets either side of the band playing in two different musical keys. The band then plays an intermittent low drone like chord, again in a different musical key to the two trumpets. In my mind this opening depicts two buglers at dawn at either end of a misty field directly after a brutal slaughter. The two buglers are almost calling out for their missing comrades only to realise they are gone...... The work moves into a haunting oboe melody signifying loss. The oboe is joined by the full band in a tune of strength, solidarity, yet profound sadness. The work concludes with a recap of the opening idea; however, the two buglers are now united in musical key sounding 'The General Salute'. The music ends as the wind blows gently. The memories live on forever......

Weather Report - Shin'ya Takahashi
Weather Report was commissioned by Marunouchi Junior High School in Nagano in 2010 and premiered at the Nagano State Band Contest. One of my new thoughts for composition has been to ask students for titles, images and ideas. For this commission I collected many interesting concepts, and quite a few had to do with weather. So, I constructed the piece based on weather news and report. After the main weather news presentation, the meteorologist presents the daily weather forecast:"The morning will be clear and beautiful becoming cloudy at noon and eventually shower later. Rain intensity will increase turning into a thunderstorm. Towards the evening, rain and storm will leave, and there will be a beautiful sunset. That's the weather for today."(Shin'ya Takahashi)

Sunrise at Angel's Gate - Philip Sparke
This piece depicts the refined beauty of the Grand Canyon at sunrise and sunset. These are the best times to view the Canyon with the sun low in the sky casting shadows that give depth and form to the vast panorama. Angel's Gate is one of the many named rock formations in the canyon. The composer has tried to depict the sights and sounds of dawn, birdsong in the early morning sky and the gradual revelation of the Canyon itself as sunlight reaches into its rocky depths.Towards the end of the piece, to the sound of a tolling bell, we are however reminded of the dangers that the beauty of the Grand Canyon so cleverly hides.
