Suite Marchigiana (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
According to a famous statement by Herder, folk songs represent the archives of a nation's knowledge, the expression of its heart and theimage that reflects its history and identity. Suite Marchigiana is a three movement piece, inspired by folk songs from the Marche in central Italy, a region with a very ancient and rich folkloristic heritage. The first movement elaborates on the well-known Pasquella. The Pasquella comes from a traditional winter begging ritual where a group of musicians go from house to house singing verses, wishing their audience good health, wealth and abundance, in return for small amounts of money, food and wine. The second movement is an Andante Triste inspired by an old song called Sona la mezzanotte (The Clock Strikes Midnight), a melancholic song that reminds us of unhappy love stories, bereavement, and so on. Luciano Feliciani concludes the suite with the Saltarello Marchigiano, which is bright and sparkling, and therefore in complete contrast with the previous movement. Although unproven, the Saltarello is thought to have its origins in the 'saltatio' (a latin dance). While the choreae were group dances, circular in structure and with a rhythmic progression, the saltationes were more lively in character. The fast, frenetic and joyous saltarello was without any doubt the most famous musical expression of rural central Italy in the nineteenth century. 10:20

Suite - A Renaissance Christmas (Wind Band) Kevin Norbury
VIEW SCORE PDF This magnificent festive suite was written by Kevin Norbury for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School Wind Symphony and features three well known carols set in a Renaissance style. Three contrasting movements comprise the work: i. Processional (Personent hodie - On this day earth shall ring) This is a short piece imagining a torchlight Yuletide procession (perhaps bearing the traditional roasted wild boar), using a well-known Christmas melody from the large collection of music compiled in the 16th century called Piae Cantiones (1582). The tune is presented twice with accompanying, related melodic material. ii. Pastorale (Quem pastores laudavere - Shepherds sang their praises o'er him) This is a 14th-century melody which was originally collected by Michael Praetorius at the end of the 16th-century. The treatment throughout is very lyrical without overly complex harmonies. The melody is heard three times with brief linking episodes and a short coda. iii. Celebration! (In dulci jubilo - In sweet celebration - Ding-dong merrily on high) This magnificent 13th-century melody was also a part of Michael Praetorius's collection. It is traditionally associated with the words 'Good Christian men, rejoice!' The opening is a straight transcription of the great chorale prelude for organ by J.S. Bach. After the grandeur of the opening, the tune is heard in more of a 'folky' style. A lot of related melodic material is then presented before the tune Ding-dong merrily on high is heard. After another episode of previously used music In dulci jubilo reappears in a joyful conclusion to the piece. Crunchy Granola Suite - Neil Diamond
Neil Diamond wrote his Crunchy Granola Suite when he moved to Los Angeles in the 1970s and got to know macrobiotic granola as part of a health-conscious lifestyle. The lyrics of this cheerful song even suggest that eating granola might just be more wholesome than a visit to a psychologist... The song became even better known when the renowned Percy Faith Orchestra turned it into an instrumental version. It was the tune of a number of radio shows, and for good reason. The catchy music is recognizable: an earworm that keeps playing through your mind - in a good way. Highly recommended for your next concert!

Solveig's Song (from Peer Gynt Suite No. 2) - Edvard Grieg
Composed by Edvard Grieg in 1875, music from Peer Gynt was originally incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's five-act play. The beautiful Solveig's Song is from the second orchestral suite later extracted by Grieg. Johnnie's tender setting opens with a lyric theme scored for the trumpet section. A brief andante section features the woodwinds before returning to the opening melody this time richly scored for full band. A beautiful work for teaching lyric style playing.

Mammoth Mountain Suite - Haakon Esplo
Mammoths were a family of elephants that, with one exception, died out at the end of the last ice age. Their closest living relative is the Asian elephant. In many places in the world one can find mammoth remains. In Norway (especially in Gudbrandsdalen), 20 discoveries of teeth and skeletal remains have been made after mammoths that lived here between 40,000 and 50,000 years ago. On cave paintings and carvings you can see many pictures of mammoths with other animals. Pictures of killed mammoths have also been found with humans. Mammoth Moutain Suite describes a bunch of hunters looking for mammoths. Imagine the majestic animals, what it felt like to see the herd in themountains and what it sounded like when the 6 ton heavy and 3.5 meter tall mammoths were on the run.
