The French composer Daniel Franois Esprit Auber (1782-1871) witnessed many important developments in the history of music ? from Luigi Cherubini to Richard Wagner. His extensive output consisted mainly of operas, but unfortunately today only two of these are still well known, including the comic opera Fra Diavolo. The story concerns Fra Diavolo, a famous Italian bandit and soldier from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and is one of crime, lust and treachery. The overture has a classical structure and is filled with striking themes and motifs and has a particularly unusual introduction (for the time) with the snare drum taking the leading role!

£144.99Pierius Magnus - Jan de Haan
Pierius Magnus is a historical figure from the Friesland area of Holland. He was a farmer who became a resistance fighter against Dutch oppressors in around 1500. Whether Magnus was a hero or barbarian is still debatable, but composer Jan de Haan was fascinated by the exciting story and let it fuel his imagination. The protagonist is introduced with a capricious theme which is followed by "De Arumer Swarte Heap," the troops who took to the battlefields against the Dutch. An eerie calm takes over moments before Pier and his troops let their battle cries sound. The work ends as the disillusioned Pier retreats. A concert work overflowing with excitement!

According to his teachers, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), was not particularly gifted. His special talents were acknowledged only in 1865 when he had been working for the Ministry of Finances for some years. In 1866 he was appointed teacher at the Conservatory and applied himself to composing. His oeuvre is fairly extensive and many of his compositions receive a high ranking on the international list of classical music, including his six symphonies, solo concertos (violin concerto and piano concertos), ballets (The Nut Cracker, Swan Lake), and his overtures (1812 and Romeo and Juliette). In 1893 Tchaikovsky died of Cholera after drinking a glass of infectedwater. His Slavonic March is a popular concert piece for symphonic orchestra that is still frequently performed in concert halls. David Well arranged the theme and created a contemporary march in rock style. Tchaikovsky once said to an unsatisfied teacher: 'I will be a great composer within 10 years time.'

The famous pioneer of original Dutch wind music realised in the early fifties that the wind band had no classical repertoire at all.He thought this shortage should be completed with original compositions instead of transcriptions and arrangements. This little symphony was an immediate success and still belongs to the repertoire of many bands. We thought it was high time to publish a new edition with a full score.

Cavalleria rusticana (rustic chivalry) is an opera in one act, composed by Pietro Mascagni, based on a play written by Giovanni Verga. Pietro Mascagni however was the only one to become famous. The work still occupies a permanent place in the current opera repertoire. The symphonic interlude provides a moment of instrumental rest during the opera. Expertly arranged by Willy Hautvast.

£245.50Symphonie de l'Eau - Serge Lancen
This symphony was composed in 1984 and is dedicated to the great French composer Ida Gotkovsky a good friend of the Lancen family. It was the test piece in the Seccion Primera of the famous Spanish wind band contest Certamen International de Bandes de Msica Ciudad de Valncia and was recorded by the Symphonic Band of the Maastricht Conservatory of Music conducted by Sef Pijpers. Serge Lancen himself related the genesis of this symphony as follows:When I was twelve years old I had started composing a piece which described the cycle of the water. The project was however abandoned and only some themes were left unused. In July 1983, I went by boat to the WASBE conference in Skien, Norway and was seduced by the North Sea. During the travel a musical theme was born and was the trigger for the realisation of my ancient project which I still fancied'. The 'Symphonie de l'Eau' is in fact a musical description of the cycle of the water which the composer defines as follows:'A slight mist rises and turns into a cloud. Water drops fall on the mountain. A brooklet rises and clears a way throughout the alpine pastures. Soon other small watercourses join the original brook that is now reinforced as to become a real roaring mountain river falling in a lake amidst a quiet and poetic surrounding. The water turns again into a river when leaving the lake and gradually becomes a big stream which majestically flows towards the sea. A slight mist is rising from the huge surface and so the cycle of the water starts all over again.

The famous Spanish arranger, composer and conductor Juan Vicente Mas Quiles (Lliria, 1925) has laways had very close connections with the interantionally reknown symphonic band 'Banda Primitiva' (El Clarin) of his native town in the neighbourhood of Valencia. He started in the band as a young musician, he has often been a member of the council, he has constantly been guest-conductor and also very often acting-conductor and he still is the first musical advisor of this elite band. Each year the members of the society (the clarineros and clarineras) elect the 'Clarinera Mayor', the young lady presiding the group of PR ladies, dressed in national costume. It was to honour Seorita Belinda Verdeguer Garcia, Clarinera Mayor 1994-95, that Mas Quiles wrote this festive and elegant concert pasodoble.

The song which you can still frequently hear in Japan today has been composed in a Western style, but boasts the typical sound colours of the Far East in its harmonics.

Blaze of Glory - Robert Sheldon
This outstanding overture begins with a declamatory statement in the woodwinds. The heroic melody subsides to a softer section which still retains the energy of the piece. A beautiful lyrical section places emphasis on musicality with plenty of opportunities for rubato. The return of the opening theme brings the work to a triumphant conclusion. Very characteristic of Robert Sheldon's exceptional writing for young bands.

Purple Mountain Majesty (America, The Beautiful) - Samuel A. Ward
Purple Mountain Majesty is an arrangement of Samuel Augustus Ward's beloved patriotic anthem America, the Beautiful. While the band arrangement by Carmen Dragon remains a classic in its own right, this setting is designed to provide younger bands with a more technically accessible yet still harmonically interesting version. The woodwind exposures surrounding the original melodic material are intended to place the piece in a more pastoral environment, hence the title.
