Letter from Sado is an exciting piece for young band designed to draw out the musicality in young players. With a focus on interpretation of an ancient haiku poem with natural imagery, performers are invited to become decision makers about specific sections in the music. Their decisions include ideas regarding tempo, dynamics and articulation in order to represent a wild stormy sea and a still starry night. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Written in a single summer month while World War II was still raging in 1944, Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 would become not only one of the composer's most celebrated and performed works, it would stand among the giants in all of 20th Century classical compositions. Cast in four movements, Prokofiev once gave a statement that he intended it as a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit. He added, I cannot say that I deliberately chose this theme. It was born in me and clamoured for expression. The music matured within me. It filled my soul. Deliberate or not, his statement likely helped placate the Communist Soviet Party, who under Stalin ruthlessly, and often fatally, censored the art and music of the time. This Southern Music publication represents the first complete band transcription of Prokofiev's monumental work by one of the world's most respected wind band editors, Dr. R. Mark Rogers. The edition provides a rare opportunity in the symphonic wind band repertoire for ensembles to perform an orchestral masterpiece in its entirety.

Opening Music - Ben Haemhouts
Opening music is one of the first works for wind orchestra by Ben Haemhouts and was originally written under assignment from the Fanfare St. Pieters Kapelle Belgium. The slow mysterious introduction introduces the main theme that consists of the notes F, C, B-flat, F, a combination that was woven throughout the entire work. Then a stirring allegro part follows, with a melodious passage in the euphoniums. The end is a long-drawn-out resuming of the beginning that builds up to a large climax, still built on the same basic tones. This overture is a solemn openings work for every occasion.

The Wind Rises - Joe Hisaishi
This beautiful, lyrical melody is so colorful in the film, without having an imposing image. "The Wind Rises" (2013) does not dominate the visual, and perhaps is an ideal form of film music considering this is director Miyazaki's final production. Chamber ensembles with solos and strings are frequently used in the soundtrack, so the sound is mellow and soft. As you listen more and more, you still recognize the tradition of Ghibli music.When I arrange, I try not to visualize the image of a film. I may think of characters and story line but is it important to write music that alone is appealing and fascinating. Trying not to "overstate" the film is not needed here. If you can bring out the most appealing parts of the soundtrack, excess can be forgiven. Of course, I have not changed the musical elements of the original.I asked Mr. Tomoki Ubata (band director at Ina Gakuen Sr. High School) whom I have worked with numerous times to assist with layout. He came up with a heartwarming medley with two main parts; leading boy Jiro's gift for aeronautical design and his romance with the heroine, Natsuko.The following themes are contained in the arrangement:1. Nahoko (A Rainbow) Beginning2. Caproni (An Aeronautical Designer's Dream) C3. A Journey (An Encounter at Karuizawa) H4. The Falcon I5. Prototype 8 N6.
