SOUNDS are exercises designed to improve DYNAMICS, RHYTHM, CRESCENDO and DIMINUENDO, INTERVALS, RESTS and ACCENTS. The exercises can also be used for warm-up purposes. They are interesting to play whilst creating an awareness of some of the fundamentals of good performance. ROUNDS are a form of Canon in unison (or octaves) with the players entering at regular rhythmic periods. The first Rounds were printed in 1609 so people have enjoyed performing this form of music for a very long time and still do. Kookaburra comes from Australia, Row Row Row the Boat is English, Frre Jacques is French and in this version a variation on the original melody has been added which also works as a round and adds to the fun. A full score has been provided in order to facilitate rehearsal.

This hymn was commissioned by "Antwerpen 93". And this city, on the banks of the river Schelde has been nominated "Cultural Capital of Europe" for 1993. The work-group "animatie" took the initiative and commissioned a hymn, which -as the finale to a grand open-air event on 27th March- was premired by hundreds of musicians from all over Europe. Philippe Langlet (France) was the conductor at this majestic occasion. Musically speaking the piece can no doubt be labelled easy. Indeed it is meant to represent a hymn, playable by all in different instrumental combinations. Consequently a variable instrumentation was chosen and a type of music, which by native is easily accessible and uncomplicated. The conductor is free -in the instrumentation- to score this piece according to his own taste. It is perhaps advisable to use the sharp brass in the forte parts, in order to make the range in the sound of the orchestra as colourful as possible. The percussion parts are not absolutely essential, so that the hymn can also be performed without percussion.Duration: 4:00

This little concerto for clarinet was written for Peter Holligan , a friend of its composer, and the Fife Youth Concert Band (Scotland). The work was based on traditional Celtic music, and consists of three movements. 1. Reel - a fast dance ending in an atmospheric but virtuoso cadenza. 2. Lament - a slow and melancholy song hinting at the sound of bagpipes. 3. A fast and virtuoso dance in 6/8 time with Irish influence. The work is a wonderful audience-pleaser and an absolute 'must' for all clarinet-players. The band too is called upon and by all means does have its part to play in the piece. Band grade 4, soloist grade 5. Dit Concertino voor klarinet werd geschreven voor Peter Holligan , een vriend van de componist, en de Fife Youth Concert Band (Schotland). Het werk is gebaseerd op de traditionele Keltische muziek, en bestaat uit drie delen. 1. Reel - een snelle dans die eindigt in een sfeervolle, maar virtuoze cadens. 2. Lament - een trage en melancholische melodie die het geluid van doedelzakken verbeeldt.3. Een snelle en virtuoze dans in 6 / 8 maatsoort met Ierse invloeden.
