Captain Hornblower (Trumpet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Fraser, Bruce
Captain Hornblower is a lively solo for the young trumpet player and is modelled on the 18th century trumpet tune with its major and minor sections. As is the case with all solos, the balance between band and soloist must be carefully handled and the bands with the benefit of many bass instruments may wish to rest the brass while the soloist is playing.Duration: 2.00

Variations on a Nautical Hymn (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Williams, Mark
Based on the Naval Hymn, "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," this work opens with an aggressive fanfare which leads to the hymn, stated in a chorale fashion. The first variant is Allegro and features interplay between rhythmic figures in the percussion section with mirrored polychords in the woodwinds. The second variant is reminiscent of the music of Erik Satie and features a beautiful pairing of flute and oboe solos supported by strong countermelodies played by the horns. A third variant in 6/8 provides another interesting point of view before the work closes in Maestoso fashion. Another Mark Williams masterpiece! Duration: 6.15

The Seventh Night of July (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sakai, Itaru
In Japan, July the 7th is a holiday known as Tanabata, for which large celebrations are held throughout the country. The Seventh Night of July is Itaru Sakai's musical interpretation of this romantic legend. The alto saxophone and euphonium solos during the middle movement represent the two main themes from the legend.Duration: 8:40

Scarborough Fair, Variations on (Concert Band - Score and parts) - Custer, Calvin
First published in 1989, this work from the late Calvin Custer epitomises his command of orchestration and understanding of musical pacing. The familiar folk melody is stated first by a solo flute then followed by a remarkable series of variations starting with a brass choir accompanied by woodwind flourishes. An Andante variation features the woodwind choir accompanying solos by baritone and oboe, and this leads to a striking fugue variation and bold finish. Truly symphonic band writing at its best.Duration: 4:45

Agua's Whelm
A very exciting and contemporary work that is descriptive of the tragedy that occurred in Central America in 1541 when a long quiet volcano that had filled with water suddenly erupted, sending mud and water covering the city of Ciudad Vieja killing many and completely wiping out the city. The name of that volcano was Agua, which on that day brought whelm on to everything that its waters touched. This is the second published work by young composer Cory McBride and was written when he was a 16 year old high school student. Bold, unique and distinctive, includes solos for flute, tenor sax, bari sax & horn and it's an excellent programming choice for any festival or concert performance by better bands.
