Lullaby from Four Watercolours - Tor Aulin
Few composers have had such an impact on Swedish music life as Tor Aulin (1866 1914). He studied violin and music theory in Stockholm 1877 83, and in Berlin 1884 86. In 1887 he founded the Aulin Quartet, which for more than 20 years played animportant role in broadening Swedish interest in chamber music. The quartet was often on tour with the composer Wilhelm Stenhammar at the piano.1889 1902 Aulin was the leader of the orchestra at the Royal Opera in Stockholm.At Aulinsinstigation the Concert Association in Stockholm (later The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) was founded in 1902, and he was its conductor until 1909. From then on he was the conductor of the Gothenburg ConcertAssociation (nowadays The GothenburgSymphony Orchestra).Besides being a first class violinist, Tor Aulin was also an accomplished pianist, and Edvard Grieg was deeply impressed by Aulin's rendering of his piano concerto.Aulins list of works is dominated by his musicfor violin. He wrote three violin concertos, the third of which still has a place in the repertoire.Four Aquarelles for violin and piano from 1899 is his most beloved composition. In 1996 Jerker Johansson arranged this work for soloinstruments, one for each of the four movements, and concert band. The solo instruments being clarinet, trumpet, flute and alto saxophone.

Musica Festiva - Menno Bosgra
This 3-part work begins with a martial and heroic theme where the brass and drums play an important role. A second melodic theme contrasts with the first, although elements of the first theme remain clearly present and they in turn provide a link to the second, calmer movement which is introduced with a splendid solo on the saxophone. You can hear fragments of the first part here too.In the third part, the small drum begins to play the background theme and is followed by a grand group of brass instruments playing a heavy concert march which, after an increase of tempo, gradually ends in a grand finale which refers once again to the initial theme.

Elegy - Melvin L. Shelton
A touching and intense memoriam piece, the mechanics are on the easy side of Grade 4, but the demand for tone quality and control in tenuto passages and long slurred phrases calls for the best of musicianship from any group. The "Adagio e Rubato" tempo indication invites the kind of wonderfully expressive ensemble playing that should probably make up a larger part of band literature than it does today. Over a quiet unifying heartbeat from the timpani, the band explores the emotions felt after a tragic personal loss. A soaring F Horn solo (cued in Trumpet. and Alto Saxophone) leads poignantly toward a gentle Orchestra Bells and Wind Chime ending.

Showdown for Band was written as a compulsory exercise for the Third International Light Music Competition at St. Gallen, Switzerland in 1998. The intention of the composer was to write a piece in a light music style that would at the same time challenge the various bands, particularly in the area of rhythm. The work is divided into four parts: Opening, Ballad, Finale and Ending. Using melodies that are easy on the ear and varied instrumentation, many facets of the entire band are displayed. The solo in the middle part can be played by either soprano or alto saxophone, or even by a flugel horn. To celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten in Innsbruck Philip Sparke composed Wilten Festival Overture. A bold fanfare, led by the horns, forms the opening of the work from which an expressive theme unfolds until the full band reaches a climax. Short solo statements from saxophone, horn and trumpet lead to a recapitulation of this theme which melts into a rhythmic Vivo. A robust melody is is then played by the clarinets and taken up by the whole band before a legato figure leads to a cantabile theme, again presented by the clarinets. The original Vivo melody reappears before the opening fanfare is briefly heard and the work comes to an end with ashort Coda. A great experience for the whole band!

Sir Hubert Parry (1848-1918) belongs to a forgotten generation of English composers who are often over-shadowed by Sir Edward Elgar, and the result has been that much of their work is little played or forgotten.
