This work for band is a setting of several delightful Moravian folk dances. "Stoji hruska v oudoli" is a fast-paced two-step dance. "Rozluc se Ancicko" features a clarinet solo in a mournful, yet lilting, slow 6/8 melody. "Preskoda nastokrat" is a highly rhythmic piece in a moderate tempo that features a brief double reed/piccolo section. "Ma zlata maticka" begins with an unaccompanied alto saxophone solo, then includes a folk dance that begins slowly and increases in tempo. "Vojaci jedou" is a proud and uplifting march in 3/4 time. "U Kltera pole" ends the rhapsody with a lively 2/4 dance that builds to a rousing conclusion. The Breeze Brass Band, based in Osaka, Japan, is a professional ensemble, which was founded in 1990 to encourage the growth of brass bands there. They have invited many leading British conductors, composers and soloists to share their expertise and without doubt have been responsible, through concerts and recordings, for a huge increase in interest in brass bands in their country.In November 2000 they reached their 10th anniversary and commissioned Philip Sparke, a frequent visitor, to write a piece to celebrate the occasion. Flying the Breeze was the result and the composer made the concert band transcription in 2004.The piece opens with three repeated notes (in the brass band version these were written Bs - BBB being the band's initials) and a short introduction leads to a robust theme from the clarinets, horns and trombones, which is then taken up by trumpets. A restless bridge passage leads to a syncopated tune from the alto saxophone and then to a third theme from a solo euphonium. A graceful second subject, initially on a solo clarinet, leads back to a recall of the introductory material before a full-scale recapitulation. An intense allargando leads to a full-band version of the second subject under a running woodwind passage, which leads to a short coda.Duration: 6:00

The Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan possibly had his greatest success in 1972 with Clair. With its jazzy harmony, this song deviated a little from the spirit of the time. Stefan Schwalgin took the theme of Clair as a starting point, and gave the melody to the alto saxophone. His arrangement fits the tradition of solo works in which it is not so much about technical virtuosity, but rather about the sincerity and charm of the expression. North Hills Fantasy was commissioned by the North Hills High School Bands, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (director: Len Lavelle) as part of a commissioning programme that has run since 1965 - the longest of its kind in the USA. The work opens with a reflective, unaccompanied solo for alto saxophone which develops into a chorale for horns and saxes. This is taken up by the trumpets and subsides to a change of key and mood, with highly decorated folk-like solos for clarinet, bassoon and saxes. These solos build to a climax for full band, which heralds a triumphant return of the horn chorale, accompanied by florid woodwind figuration. But the mood soon winds down; fragments of earlier melodies return calmly to peacefully close the work. Duration: 5.30
