    Brave Wolfe

This mournful piece is based on a Canadian folk song which is an account of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, where the British, led by General Wolfe, captured Quebec City from the French, under General Montcalm. This lyrical arrangement makes use of rich harmonies influenced by jazz and pop music. There are some great solo sections to feature a talented alto saxophone, clarinet, and flute member of the ensemble.

    Windscape - David Marlatt

is in four sections. It opens with "The Winds from the North." The driving bass line combined with the punctuated shots, represent the bitter winds that blow. This moves into "The Winds of Change." This has a shifty but steady pulse that features melody in the trumpet at first and then a countermelody added by the flutes and saxophones. Crystal glasses and a lone alto saxophone are the featured sonorities in "The Winds of Mystery." "The Winds of Change" reappears and, with several sidebar introductions of new rhythmic and melodic material, the piece ends as it should---driving and enthusiastic.

    Couchiching Suite - John Herberman

was written as a commission from the National Music Camp of Canada, which runs each year on the shores of beautiful Lake Couchiching, north of Toronto, Canada. The goal in composing this piece was to give the top students at the camp a challenging and original piece to play. The first movement is a march in 5/4 that derives its pulse from the melodic shapes, rather than set groupings of beats. The middle movement is a slow homophonic song with rich harmonies and thick chordal textures requiring good listening and tuning skills. The third movement is a burner in mixed meters featuring solo alto saxophone and a soaring soli for the French horns. This is a great concert suite to showcase the achievements and abilities of a senior ensemble.

Aria for Winds - Glen Gillis

is based on Glen Gillis' earlier composition, "Nicole's Aria" for alto saxophone and piano---dedicated to his daughter shortly after she was born. In the Aeolian mode, this piece incorporates some subtle dissonances within a hollow open 5th harmony. Haunting melodic lines combined with colorful percussion writing make this a terrific concert or contest piece.

    High Five! - Steve Hodges

Looking for some music to get the audience more involved in your concert? Here it is! A medium-rock groove sets the stage for an eighth-note motive that signals the band and audience to give "high fives" throughout the piece. Soloists on the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and clarinet are featured on two-measure phrases that lead to an exciting "drum-off" between the snare and tom players. Band members and directors are encouraged to use their creativity in the solo section as well as in giving "high fives" to each other and to the audience. A really fun piece! (3:05)
