Composed for woodwind artist Gary Foster, the "Suite for Solo Flute, Clarinet and Alto Sax" is a perfect concert showpiece for the multiple woodwind instrumentalist. The opening allegro features flute, demonstrating both technical prowess as well as a jazz-influenced lyrical theme. A return to the allegro is followed by a cadenza, then a switch to clarinet for a haunting and beautiful Lento, and a showy waltz. Concluding on alto saxophone, the soloist again demonstrates great technique as well a lyrical playing. Starsleet - Aslak Dørum
Stjernesludd is a hit single from the popular Norwegian band DumDum Boys. The song-writer Aslak Drum is the bass-player in the band. It was recorded in 1997, and it has been a well know radio-hit ever since. The lyrics are set in a dark tone, andthey tell the story of a gloomy and "black and white" feeling in the cold weather before Christmas. "But when the winter comes, we can make angels in the snow..." In 2010, Norwegian singer Kurt Nilsen accompanied by The Norwegian RadioOrchestra recorded it for their CD "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas".If performed with Tenor Sax soloist, the first time bracket can be omitted.

"My Fantastic Gramps" is a bubbly piece about an old man.The style of playing must be fresh and youthful throughout the piece.Watch the balance in bar 12. 1st flute (piccolo) and 1st alto sax should be prominent in the balance.At bar 28 and equivalent bars, the flutes and clarinets(!) should be playing vibrato.Please make sure that trumpets play the articulation (short) excessively at bar 70 (banjo-style). Feel free for some slapstick-mood at bar 86. Be creative!The style at bar 115 must be outgoing and happy, with a lot of joyfulness!

This work is a commission by the Missouri Bandmasters Association to honor the 50th Anniversary of the MMEA. From the opening melody stated by unison flutes, 1st clarinet and 1st trumpet, the work quickly starts through a development of that melody that only this composer does so well. The writing is very "rubato" chorale style often interrupted with short allegro sections but always returning to the opening statement. There is a short flute solo passage as well as a very fluent alto sax solo. A dramatic piece that bands will enjoy playing for years to come.
