The Road to Chancellorsville - Bryan Kidd

This is one to get excited about! In the style of a "patrol" march, THE ROAD TO CHANCELLORSVILLE takes us back to that pivotal point in history, the American Civil War. The Battle of Chancellorsville is regarded as Confederate General Robert E. Lee's most brilliant victory, but the cost was so high that the Secessionist forces never really recovered. They were forced to surrender less than two years later.Opening with light percussion and just two piccolos (substitute two flutes if necessary) this bright and easy march builds relentlessly from beginning to end. March into history with THE ROAD TO CHANCELLORSVILLE.

Night of Wonder - Douglas Court

In a singing style, this pretty work will be a sparkling and reverent moment in your holiday concert. A superb contrast piece from the pen of Douglas Court, NIGHT OF WONDER engages fascinating harmonic and contrapuntal forces in a truly unique arrangement of WHILE SHEPHERDS WATCHED THEIR FLOCKS.While the wind players get to work on expressive playing, there's plenty of engaging activity for the percussionists too, so rehearsing this contrast piece won't pose the problems of "uninvolved personnel" that some expressive pieces can create in young bands.Beautiful music!

When Time Will Be No More - James Curnow

This work was commissioned in memory of Peter J. Swanson, a trumpet and cornet player who tragically died at the tender age of fourteen. Peter's favorite gospel song, Just a Closer Walk with Thee, has been used as the basis for this piece of contrasts which takes the listener through many styles and moods. The spiritual character of the original song resounds gloriously in When Time Will Be No More.

    Stampede!!! - Mike Hannickel

STAMPEDE!!! takes us back to an old American West of longhorn cattle-drives, chuck wagons, campfires and trail songs.Based on several authentic cowboy songs, STAMPEDE!!! opens at dawn (birdcalls included) with the "Cowboy's Gettin' Up Holler". Lively fiddle and harmonica motifs and an eloquent scoring of "Good-bye, Old Paint" are just part of this contribution to Grade 3 concert band literature by Mike Hannickel. "The Chisholm Trail" (a true cowboy classic) figures importantly at the beginning and, in a driving re-harmonization, leads to the thrilling conclusion.

George Washington Suite - Mike Hannickel

History! Introduce a bit of good old early-Americana to your audiences this year. GEORGE WASHINGTON SUITE is made up of three tunes known to have been composed for (or about) George and Martha Washington in their own time. Probably the best known of the three is the first movement, WASHINGTON'S GRAND MARCH, which is believed to have been written by Francis Hopkinson. He was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The second movement has the delightful title "Fancy Menuit with figure Dance by Two young Ladies in the presance of Mrs. Washington in 1792. Phila." sic (The quaint original spellings and capitalizations are preserved here for historical interest.) A fife-and-drum style arrangement of the BRANDYWINE QUICKSTEP completes this early American triptych. The stately and moderate tempos that fit the music of this era so well also ensure that the arrangements remain accessible to young bands. Add some good old early-American spirit to your upcoming performance with GEORGE WASHINGTON SUITE!

An Irish Lullaby - Stephen Bulla

What can be more charming than a comely Irish folk melody? This is music that allows the band to play in the rubato style, with much room for expression. Found in an old British publication and simply called "Irish Air," this endearing arrangement is a rhapsodic treatment that takes fragments of the melody and develops them into a large symphonic work. The freedom of tempi allows you to work with your band in a sensitively conducted way that only a beautiful piece like this will allow. There is always room on a concert program for at least one lush, melodic contrast piece. Perhaps this one is for you. It's so difficult to describe a thing of real beauty. Please listen tothe demo recording and hear it for yourself.

The Kerry Dance - Stephen Bulla

Here's a delightful folk song of Irish origin, with a hint of nostalgia thrown in for good measure. It was probably once played on the Bagpipes and is definitely emulated that way in this arrangement.

Missouri River Festival - David W. Moore

Filled with rhythmic and harmonic interest as well as memorable melodies, MISSOURI RIVER FESTIVAL is an energetic and enjoyable piece that gives every section in the band an opportunity to shine. Moods of the river are artistically represented in the interplay between Maestoso, Allegro spiritoso and Andante mysterioso sections. Artistic exploration of thematic material is a hallmark of David W. Moore's writing, and you'll find plenty of it here. There is an added practical advantage, too. All brass parts are dynamic, interesting and fun to play, but there is plenty of brass "resting time" carefully interspersed throughout the piece. You can use MISSOURI RIVERFESTIVAL at virtually any time during in your program without fear of over-taxing the brasses.Outstanding!
