Malcolm Arnold's Clarinet Concerto No. 2, Op. 115, was dedicated to Benny Goodman, and first performed by him as part of the Red Rocks Music Festival with the Denver Symphony Orchestra conducted by Brian Priestman on 17 August 1974. The third movement, known affectionately as 'The Pre-Goodman Rag', is an outrageous ragtime parody with a hauntingly wistful middle section. Les Trois Mousquetaires (The Three Musketeers) was commissioned by the Miraphone company for the Miraphone Tuba Quartett and the Musique des Gardiens de la Paix (Paris, France). It was premi?red in Guebwiller (France), on 28 June 2003 by its dedicatees.Even if you have never read a line of the mythical novel The Three Musketeers (1844) by Alexandre Dumas, father, you will at least have?heard of the "four invincibles"; four extraordinary names - D'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis - and one unique motto "All for one, and one for all." The musical texture of Les Trois Mousquetaires is focused on specific elements of a character's personality rather than on its influence on the book's plot. Maxime Aulio has largely turned his attention on D'Artagnan, the sensitive, romantic and perfect gentleman who is easily charmed by women such as the gentle Constance Bonacieux and the perfidious Milady de Winter whose beguiling beauty seduced him. The first movement - D'Artagnan - is true to the character of the young provincial noble of the Gascony region: heroic and enthusiastic in all circumstances. The second movement entitled Constance Bonacieux, is romantic, delicate and passionate. The third and last movement is as duplicitous as the bewitching femme fatale its reveals: Milady de Winter.

Like any boss on a deadline, the big guy in red can be a harsh taskmaster, and the elves in his workshop have had enough. They work against a cynical soundtrack of jingling bells until "The Man" steps out, giving way to a raucous celebration (and their first break in weeks.) As abruptly as it begins, the party stops when the boss's whistle cuts through, and the grumbling elves return to their monotonous assembly of the year's toys. Great fun for beginning and developing bands!?

Wild Horse Canyon
Here is wonderful program music for young bands suggesting the imagery of wild horses roaming free in the Red Rock canyons of Utah. Interesting parts abound, with unison and independent lines for all players. The short opening fanfare sets the stage for the brisk allegro section. A short interlude leads to a lyrical section for the woodwinds and low brass. A new transitional fanfare leads us back to a recap of the main themes. An inspiring concert or festival selection!
