The Red Tower was inspired by the painting of the same name (La Torre Rossa) by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, and was awarded first prize in the International Composition Contest in Oman. One of the towers of the mediaeval walls of the Italian town of Soncino (home to the band for whom Johan de Meij wrote the work for) shows a remarkable resemblance to the tower in the work of De Chirico.

Red River - Rob Wiffin
Red River is a piece full of raw energy. The title is about the feeling engendered by the name rather than a reference to a specific place. In the composer's mind it is a river coloured red by the dust of the earth in a hot, sun-drenched landscape. Red Lines (CB) - Stijn Aertgeerts
Red Lines was commissioned by the Swiss Army Brass Band and their conductor Philipp Werlen. The title is a reference to their very distinctive black uniforms with Red vertical lines. Switzerland is a country with a tremendously rich brass band culture and have some of the best bands in the world. The individual level of musicians is also of incredibly high quality. The work begins very bombastically with continuous 8th notes. This immediately sets the drive for the entire first movement where the low brass and woodwinds can also show off huge sounds several times. It culminates in a grand tutti before the music calms down in the second movement where the euphonium can show its solistic qualities and the band can show a big difference in dynamics and sound. The final movement is driven by the drums and timpani that provide a solid boost to keep moving the thematic material forward in the band and through the percussion solo a big build-up to a glorious finale.

In Red Fury, the frantic battle between a man and a fire ant hill is portrayed with dramatic and humorous flair. From the initial calm of the ants going about their business to the chaotic battle that follows, the music uses fast-paced rhythms, clashing dissonances, and vibrant percussion to create a sense of tension and urgency. Each section of the battle is characterized by different musical elements, such as a military march for the ants' preparation and whip-like sounds for the human's attempts to fend them off, ending in the victorious ants' triumph.
