The England of Elizabeth,Three Portraits from (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Williams, Vaughan - Noble, Paul

This suite was derived from Vaughan Williams' score for the film, The England of Elizabeth, written in 1955. It was the composer's tenth of his 11 cinematic efforts and designed to serve a more descriptive role than other such scores, since the movie was a documentary featuring no action scenes, but lots of images of paintings, buildings, and the like. Composer Muir Matheson adapted this three-movement suite, probably shortly after the composer's death in 1958, though publication of the manuscript would not come until 1964. The first movement is entitled Explorer, and refers to Sir Francis Drake. Its music is mostly festive and colourful, but features interior passages of exotic flavor, similar in style to that of Vaughan Williams' then-recent Symphony No.8. The second movement is entitled Poet and, at about seven minutes, is the longest of the three in this 16 to 17 minute work. It also contains probably the score's best music, hardly a surprising result since the poet in question is Shakespeare, one of the composer's favourites and an inspirational springboard for so many other of his works. The mood is mostly subdued and Vaughan Williams presents lovely, if slightly somber music in the opening, and follows it with a hearty, folk-like dance tune. The latter part of this movement depicts Shakespeare as a noble, heroic figure in English history. The last movement, Queen, is devoted to Queen Elizabeth. It has a regal yet muscular manner at the outset, and features a gentle but somewhat disengaged middle section. It returns to the splendor and colour of the opening to close the work. This suite is important because it distills some of the best music from the film into a logically assembled structure. Program notes extracted from those of Robert Cummings.

Le Cortge du Roi Renaud (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

Le cort?ge du roi Renaud is a suite in five parts. It is based on tales that originated in southern European folk songs, dating back as far as the 16th century. A large portion of these songs are of the genre "Complaintes" songs in which the text gives a detailed description of events having a generally criminal or macabre character. The most familiar song to feature the tales of Roi Renaud is "Fualdes", consisting of 48 verses. The first part of the suite is based on the song "La Porcheronne" (The Swineherd). It telis the story of a young woman forced by her mother-in-law to tend pigs while her husband is away fighting in the war. She is freed only when her husband returns seven years later. The next part tells the story of "La mrquise Empoisonn?e" (The Poisoned Marquise). A marquise is coerced by her king to become his mistress. The jealous queen poisons her by means of a bouquet of deadly scented fiowers.Despite having the character of a merry dance, the third part, "La maumari?e vengee" (The Avenged Wedding), expresses the touching story of Queen Clotilde, persecuted for her refusal to live according to the Aryan beliefs."La belle engloutie" (The Swallowed Beauty) relates the tale of the young wife of King Renaud. She cannot imagine a life without her husband, who was mortally wounded in the war, and begs the earth to open and swallow her up so thst she may rejoin her love. The gruesome content of the final part,"Le tueur de femmes" (The Wife Killer), bears a strong resembiance to the tale of Bluebeard. The story is about a young wife in danger of being drowned in a pond by her husband, which is what happened to her 13 predecessors. Thanks to her cunning, she manages to turn the tables and contrive her husband's demise. 09:20

PURCELL VARIANTS (Advanced Concert Band) - Meechan, Peter

Purcell Variants is based on Purcell's Queen Mary's Funeral Music, which consists of four canzonas, two elegies and an anthem. The first movement begins by sounding some of Purcell's original music in the trombones and horns, underpinned by a timpani roll with the woodwind articulating the beginnings and endings of the phrases. This leads into a cadenza for trumpet and alto saxophone before the movement heads in different directions, leading us to its mysterious end, where the original music is sounded this time in the 'stabs' of the clarinets and alto saxophone. Originally composed for the funeral of Queen Mary in 1695, Purcell's original funeral music was used later that same year for Purcell's own funeral - he died aged only 34. The second movement is an elegy, inspired by this story. After an introduction (a disjointed last post), the main melody of the movement is introduced by the solo euphonium, with other solo roles for flute, oboe and alto saxophone. This is then taken over by the trumpets who lead us into the middle section of the movement. This is a quasi funeral march, inspired by the image of Purcell's coffin being taken to its final resting point. The main melody returns in the flute, oboe and alto saxophone, this time more elaborated. The movement ends with a snare drum fading away - perhaps a metaphor. The Finale is a fast and furious movement combining thematic material from the two previous movements with new rhythmical ideas. This takes us through to the final passage - the triumphant return of Purcell's original theme. Duration: 13.00

Queen of the Dolomites (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob

The introductory theme of this composition echoes the majestic size of the mountains that are visible from the picture-postcard Cortina d'Ampezzo, the so called "Queen of the Dolomites". Then we hear a lyrical theme, in which we feel the peacefulness of the surrounding countryside. We can even hear the hustle and bustle of the popular ski resort, before the two opening themes return in reverse order to bring this musical sight-seeing excursion to a close.Duration: 6:45

Zenobia The Warrior Queen - Joseph Compello

Zenobia the Warrior Queen is an excellent concert piece for young bands. The title refers to an actual historical figure who battled against the Romans in the third century. The music should convey an atmosphere of antiquity but should also be bold and aggressive. A serious work for developing bands.

Gloriana (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bocook, Jay

Commissioned by Furman University for the inauguration of its 12th president, Jay Bocook's Gloriana is based on The Faerie Queene, an incomplete English epic poem written by Edmund Spenser and dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I. In the poem, Queen Elizabeth is represented as the faerie queene herself, Gloriana. This stately work for winds and percussion has a regal quality enhanced by soaring melodies and punctuated with fanfare-like brass figures. The optional organ part provides an added dimension to the overall uplifting effect.Duration: 3:20

Fiesta (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Curtis, Matthew - Noble, Paul

Despite its Spanish title, the concert overture Fiesta is really Italian, recalling a festival that I saw several times as a child in the late 1960s while holidaying in a village at the southern tip of the bay of Naples. The date is August 15, the occasion the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, celebrated with colourful processions and ritual (some, one imagines, pre-Christian in origin), all rounded off with brass bands and home-made fireworks. - Matthew Curtis. Fiesta was originally written for the orchestra of St. Paul's School in London, It has had performances in London's Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Royal Festival Hall where it opened a live broadcast concert in the BBC's International Festival of Light Music, and has made intermittent appearances on the radio ever since. This arrangement for Wind Band will make an excellent festival opener for accomplished bands and is a sure crowd pleaser with its dynamic flare and energy.

Jubelklnge (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

Ernst Uebel (1882-1959) was born in Klingenthal in Vogtland (Germany), where he spent most of his life working as an instrument maker and conducted the municipal concert band, a task he performed for more than 30 years. In the year 1926 Ernst Uebel composed the march Jubelkl?nge and gained worldwide fame with it. The march, with its beautiful melodies and exciting drive, was played at many occasions around the world including the coronation festivities for Queen Elizabeth II in London and the Winter Olympics in Sapporo. In this arrangement the march has been adapted to suit the demands of a modern concert band whilst successfully maintaining the traditional character of the original. 04:15
