Soweto Swing Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

The sparkling music from Soweto (South Africa) has a long history. The rhythmic dances of Kwela, the 'syncopated guitars' of Mbaqanga, the saxophones and trumpets with their supple African jazz sounds as well as the infectious and sometimes gripping choir singing. All these elements can be recognized when listening to the 'Soweto String Quartet', which in its turn inspired Peter Martin to write 'Soweto Swing'. 02:00

That's the Way I Like 'Em Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

For many years Peter Kleine Schaars' jazz quartet provided sparkle and energy for various festivities and other occasions. If required the ensemble could alternate jazz repertoire with pop and latin music too. Their wide experience taught the musicians that an hour of unbeatable repertoire is the perfect end to every swinging party. Based on this practical knowledge Kleine Schaars has chosen his favourite pop pieces and arranged them in this animated medley entitled That's the Way (I like Them). 0:08:45

    Forgotten Children - Peter Meechan

Forgotten Children is a short work for wind orchestra and electronic accompaniment. Adapted from it's original form (for brass quartet and CD, Forgotten Children was written for The Desert Winds and their conductor Chuck Maguire, to whom the piece is dedicated.Whilst conceiving the piece, the subject of the war in Syria dominated news headlines, specifically the refusal by Western nations to intervene. There were, of course, political reasons at the heart of the decision, complicated by a situation that no one understood in a country no one understands. The harrowing images of chemical weapons being used on children was seemingly not enough to persuade the West that their help was needed, but those silent voices fell on even deafer ears. They were, and still are, the Forgotten Children. Please download the electronic accompaniment below.

Sir Roger de Coverley - Frank Bridge

Frank Bridge (1879 - 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen's Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month. This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band. Bridge's lively treatment of one of England's most famous traditional dance melodies will make a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley's traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig's party in Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Dave Brubeck: It's About Time - The music of Dave Brubeck / arr. Charles Sayre

The Dave Brubeck Quartet literally broke the ice regarding odd time signatures with their recordings Time Out and Time Further Out. Today, the ability to play in all time signatures is in every musician's repertoire. Charles Sayre skillfully combines "Take Five," "Unsquare Dance," and "Blue Rondo a la Turk" to take us back to when it all began. This is a magnificent medley! (4:40)

Divertimento - By Anna Amalia / arr. Lynne Latham

Anna Amalia of Prussia held various titles during her lifetime, including Princess and Abbess of Quedlinburg. Born in Berlin, she was one of ten surviving children of the royal family of King Frederick William I of Prussia. Princess Anna Amalia studied harpsichord, piano and counterpoint. Princess Anna also founded a music library collection, which included autographed scores of J.S. Bach and other composers. This collection still exists today (Amalien Bibliothek). This two-movement Divertimento in Bb Major has something for everyone. The melodic and secondary parts are passed equally between the instruments. The piano part is quite playable for a high school student. It has the character of a conversation between friends gathering for a friendly afternoon tea. This arrangement is scored for piano quartet, with a substitue clarinet part in place of violin.
