Jan Moretus (1543-1610) was a book printer and publisher in his native city of Antwerp. He worked as assistant to his father-in-law, the renowned master printer and publisher Christoffel Plantijn. After Plantijn's death in 1589 Moretus took over the business.The composition Moretus consists of four parts that draw on the remarkable personality of Jan Moretus aswell as the printing business. In both the titles of the movements and the thematic structure we can see a certain symmetry: a playful allusion to the process of printing.Part 1, A Celebrated Gentleman, describes the illustrious figure of Moretus in a festive chorale. In the second part, ExpressiveImpressions, the printing press itself is brought to life in repeated motifs - despite the industrial, mechanical nature of the process, the product always has an artistic and cultural dimension. In the third part, Impressive Expression, the wind band is invited (or challenged), to intone the slow theme with a poignant expressiveness. Part 4, A Gentle Celebration, is a celebratory finale with a fresh theme.

When the publisher asked me to make an arrangement of an ABBA tune, S.O.S. was the first song I thought of. Its introduction and melody are well suited to play for Wind Band. Admittedly, the key had to be shifted to make it sound good for this instrumentation. To me, this is nostalgia, while for others, the Mamma Mia movie/show will be what they associate with this wonderful song. Apart from a few medleys, few of ABBA's songs are available to Wind Band. So, it was very fun to work on this classic.The arrangement is made quite simply to fit many sizes of bands. Technically, it is also relatively simple both in range and rhythm. As you can see, there are many ways to adjust this arrangement to your own ensemble. Bring out melody lines and the bassline, and a lot is done. Johannesburg Festival Overture was composed for orchestra by William Walton for the 70th anniversary of Johannesburg, South Africa in 1956. Walton received the commission from Ernest Fleischmann, musical director of the Johannesburg Festival Committee, to celebrate the seventieth anniversary of the city. Fleischmann included in his request to include some African themes. For inspiration he requested recordings of African music from the African Music Society. The effect of these recordings can be heard with percussionists performing on eleven instruments. The composer also incorporated the main theme from Jean Bosco Mwenda's Masanga (which had been released on record in 1954). Walton described the piece to his publisher as a non-stop gallop...slightly crazy, hilarious and vulgar. This arrangement for Concert Band captures the original colour, excitement, and energy of the original orchestra work, and should become a staple in the repertoire of excellent bands.

As publisher of van der Beek's transcriptions of classical works Jan de Haan can look back on many years of successful collaboration with the knowledge that there will be many more to come. Unusually cast in a minor key, the main theme provides an interesting contrast to the more melodic major key of the second movement. Elgar's Variations for orchestra were written during 1898-9; they are dedicated "To my friends pictured within" Each of the 14 variations is a musical portrait to one of the composer's friends. Over the 17 bar theme which inspired the Variations, Elgar wrote the word ENIGMA. Later he said, "The ENIGMA I will not explain - its "dark saying" must be left unguessed" In Variation VIII W.N. is Winifred Norbury. In 1897 local friends organised a choral and orchestral society for Elgar to conduct. The secretaryship of The Worcester Philharmonic, as the society was called, was shared by two ladies, of whom W.N.. was one She has been described as "very sedate and calm, rather like a kind governess with Elgar, but had a sense of humour - and a laugh, rather like a deep bell". Variation IX Nimrod is Elgar's deeply felt tribute toA.J.Jaeger, his German-born friend who worked for the publisher Novello and Co. His sincere support meant a great deal to Elgar. Jaeger, in German, means "hunter". Elgar concealed this in the nickname Nimrod. The variation has become extremely popular and is often played on thoughtful occasions. In this arrangement, either W.N. or Nimrod can be played alone. However, in the Variations they are linked by Elgar in an inspired manner.

In 1878, on a commission from his publisher, Anton?n Dvor?k wrote a series of eight Slavonic dances. Modelled on Johannes Brahms' famous Hungarian Dances, although in contrast to Brahms' work, Dvor?k used no original melodies. Julius Fuc k (1872-1916) appreciated life in Sarajevo. First compositions were written, which soon made him become one of the leading representatives of his profession in Austria-Hungary. Among those works also figured his elaborate piece "Austria's Glory and Honor", which unfortunately remains kind of ill-fated up to now. Yet another area of activities, where Fu k was able to demonstrate his talents was to stage the symphony concerts introduced by him in Sarajevo. Late in fall of the year 1900 Fuc k's time had come, when the regiment deployed from Sarajevo to Budapest. He lived in that metropolis on the Danube for the next some ten years, and during that period most of hisworks were composed. At that time his popularity also grew from day to day. The first performances of his works met with general interest, and not only numerous officers most of them were friends of Fuc k attended these events, they rather were attractions for all ranks of the society. It should also not be overlooked that music publishers were anxious to secure almost each one of his works for their publishing company, and most of them were printed immediately after their premieres. In 1899 the "Laban March" was written as his Opus 44. It was dedicated to Major General Rudolf Laban of Vralje, commander of the 3d Mountain Brigade which was stationed in Nevesinje. The title of the march then changed to "Eiserne Brigade" ("Iron Brigade") until it finally became known as "Danubia". It was first printed as late as 1933 by Bohuslav Leopold (Edition Continental). Leopold was a musician in Fuc k's regimental band, and later a successful publisher. He succeeded in securing the best of Fuc k's works for his company. Sketches of "Triglav" date back to 1903. The title alludes to the highest mountain of the province of Slovenia, and this was probably an apt means in the eyes of the composer to demonstrate his "Slavonic patriotism".

The Danserye - Tielman Susato
For this collection of instrumental dances, the composer, musician and publisher Tielman Susato (ca. 1510-1570) focused on well-known folk melodies of his time. In 1551, the album was published by his own Antwerp company, bearing the title 'Het derde musyck boexken'. Manu Mellaerts has already made numerous transcriptions of renaissance works for concert band and this time he sought to create a suite of five dances, based on Susato's collection. A good challenge for those who would like to try something different!
