In The Pioneers Philip Sparke salutes the bicentenary of an expedition by two all time American heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Missouri and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the USA. They set out as the 'Corps of Discovery' from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Add a touchof the wild-west to any concert with this exciting work.

Composer Philip Sparke decided to use the idea of white to write a piece that was both bright and light in terms of harmony, colour and orchestration. He achieves this by using simple major and minor chords and emphasising the pure, transparent timbres of the upper woodwinds of the band. He was also keen to capture the essence and history of the oboe as a solo instrument. A perfect way to put your oboist in the spotlight.

The composer writes:"On March 11th 2011 a massive 9.0- magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of north-eastern Japan.I'm writing these programme notes barely a week later and the death toll caused by the quake and resulting tsunami already exceeds 6000, with thousands of people still unaccounted for. I have many friends associated with many bands throughout Japan and one of these, Yutaka Nishida, suggested I write a piece to raise money to help those affected by the disaster. I was immediately attracted by the idea and have arranged Cantilena (a brass band piece recently commissioned by the Grenland International Brass Festival, Norway) for wind band, giving it a new title tohonour my friends in the Land of the Rising Sun.I will be donating royalties from this piece to the Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Relief Fund and am delighted to say that my distributors, De Haske, who will generously also donate all net profits from sales of this piece, have pledged a substantial advance payment to the Red Cross so that what little help this project generates can be immediate.It is my sincere wish that this 'Band Aid' project will allow wind bands around the world support the people of Japan, where bands are a way of life for many, in this difficult time".Philip Sparke

A Monmouth Overture was composed in 2007 for the Haberdashers' Symphonic Winds, as part of Philip Sparke's year as composer-in-residence at the Monmouth school. The work is based around the 15th century Agincourt Song, written inhonor of Henry V's victory over the larger but outdated French army. In 2008, composer Philip Sparke published the latest volume of his instrumental books, Super Solos. Young German flautist Meinhard Drescher was so taken with these solos that his father secretly commissioned the composer toarrange three of the solos (Little Overture, Berceuse and Moto Perpetuo) into a mini-concerto for flute and concert band, which was presented to Meinhard as a 16th birthday present. Klezmer music originated in the 'shtetl' (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as 'klezmorim', had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the 'badkhn' (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the 'Purimshpil' (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the Violin and Clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used threecontrasting traditional tunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

This new three movement work by the world renowned composer Philip Sparke is based on traditional folk songs, in particular popular children's songs, from Singapore.The first movement is based on Gelang Sipaku Gelang, a well-loved folksong which has become associated with the Geylang area and is a song about community spirit and people living together in harmony. The slower second movement uses Di-Tanjung Katong, a song which is popular with childrens' choirs and third the movement uses two traditional melodies - Lenggang Kangkung which tells of the graceful swaying of watercress in the rice paddy fields and Munnaeru Vaalibaa.Why not bring as little part of the orient to yourconcert with this exotic new work.
