The rhythmic dances of Kwela, the 'syncopated guitars' of Mbaqanga, the saxophones and trumpets with their supple African jazz sounds as well as the infectious and sometimes gripping choir singing. Three Bites of the Apple Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
One of the best known nicknames for a city that is perhaps New York: "The Big Apple". Already in the thirties of the last century, this name is often used in New York jazz scene. With "The Big Apple" Manhattan was intended. It was the place to be. Around 1920 Harlem was the center of a thriving black culture. This period is known as the "Harlem Renaissance". In the famous Cotton Club were many concerts of greats like Duke Ellington. Broadway attracts millions of tourists. Composer John Harbison writes: 'Rubies is a version of Thelonious Monk's 'Ruby, My Dear', which he composed while still in his teens. When I was invited by the Seattle Symphony to make a short piecereflecting my first musical passions, my thoughts were of Bach and Monk. Since I had recently made some Bach-like chorale preludes, I chose to make a version of Monk's tune, first in a chamber-musical, contrapuntal manner, then inthe grand orchestral style I had always heard lurking there.'
