This monumental programmatic work from the pen of Rob Romeyn captures the myth and legend of Zeus, the mythical master of the gods and men. A sky god, he controls lightning, which he uses as a weapon, and thunder. It opens as Zeus becomes involved in the Trojan war, hurling lightning bolts at his opponents. The tension soon subsides as we are introduced to the eternally beautiful Hera, whom Zeus would eventually marry. The music then ensues as our story unfolds, as Zeus made his domain the mountaintops and clouds where he could survey all creation, and inflict pain and justice on all evildoers. Tension builds as Zeus battles Typhon in hand to hand combat, ending ultimately with Zeus throwing the enormous Mt. Etna at the monster, pinning him underneath. From here, the tension subsides, and a beautiful lyrical section builds to an ending of incredible power and grandeur as Zeus again reaffirms his stature as the ruler of Mt. Olympus. Out of the Darkness, Into the Light is about optimism. All of us experience disappointments in our lives, such failed relationships or the loss of loved ones, but the indomitably of the human spirit allows us to overcome such set backs and get through the darker moments. For some, faith and religion may be the answer, but this piece is more about the internal strength that we can all call upon.Opening in sombre mood, the first phase of the work symbolises the doubts we all have about ourselves and our lives. The opening phrase on solo clarinet appears throughout the piece and could be seen as the central idea of the work, the human spirit itself. The faster, central section is about the struggle to overcome the pain we experience and at bar 88 the moment of catharsis occurs. This signals a change of mood and from then on, the clarinet motif is transformed into a feeling of joy and optimism. We have entered the light.Duration: 8:30

Isaac Watts (1674-1748) wrote the lyrics of "There is a land of pure delight" and is known as the "Father of English Hymnody". Watts was for the English hymn as Ambrose was for the medieval Latin hymn and what Martin Luther was for the German chorale. He wrote about 750 songs, and some of them survide the ravahes of time. (Joy To The World, When I survey the wondrous cross, I sing the Mighty Power of God) "There is a Land of Pure Delight" is usually in English-speaking areas sung on Luther Orlando Emerson's melody ('Ascription'). Here is used a traditional English melody ('Mendip'). There is a land of pure delight Where saints immortal Reign. Infinite day excludes the night, And pleasures banish pain .. 02:45

Insurgence, by Rossano Galante, begins with a driving, rhythmic ostinato in the winds, low brass, and percussion. Soaring, aggressive horn lines take the lead in this post-apocalyptic setting. This theme is passed to the trumpets, then the winds, heralding their presence in this work. The piece transitions to a slightly lyrical section, capturing the pain and struggle these humans must endure during these challenging times. The piece recapitulates the main theme with the full ensemble, bringing this composition to a thunderous conclusion. (3:30)

Beautiful landscapes, tranquil villages, places brimming with peace and harmony - yet, in an instant, they can fall prey to the flames. Joy sinks into sorrow, but with every end comes a new beginning. From the ashes, something new arises, like a phoenix reborn. This has always been the way, the eternal circle of life that envelops our world.Imagine a serene landscape nestled in the mountains. Cows graze peacefully on alpine pastures, the sky stretches endlessly in a deep blue, and the warm spring sun casts its golden glow over the earth. From a hillside, we gaze down upon the village below, where quiet and peace reign. It is a place that carries the breath of time within its essence.But then, as if in a dream, the colors fade. Black and white take the stage, and we find ourselves transported 80 years into the past: it is April 20, 1943. The shadows of World War II have reached even St. Jakob am Arlberg. The swastika flag hangs heavily over the village square, while many of the village's men are away, serving on the front lines.On this day, Adolf Hitler's birthday, tragedy unfolds. A fire ignites - small at first, but fed by wind and timber, it grows into an unstoppable inferno. The flames hungrily consume house after house, and finally, they reach the village's beating heart: the church. Alarms echo through the streets, panic spreads like the fire itself, and the villagers fight desperately against the searing heat. Yet, despite their efforts, the steeple, which once rang out time for the village, collapses, and the church burns to its very foundations.The village is wounded, its people left amidst the ruins of their lives. But amid the ashes and despair, the true strength of the community emerges. Shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand, they come together to rebuild what seemed irretrievably lost.Gradually, color returns to the images. The wounds begin to heal, tears dry, and life blooms anew. The rose itself forms the picture of beauty and symbolises opening up to a peaceful world. The piece depicts France from the end of the 19th century through to its role at the heart of the First World War and beyond. A spectacular anddramatic new work by Jacob de Haan.

"Introduction" is a short concert opener. I quote a couple of Norwegian Folk Tunes to make a musical picture of the Vikings running from the seashore to face a battle. They used to drink something made of mushrooms to prevent fear and pain - They became Berserkings! The piece was originally scored for Brass Band and commissioned by Manger Musikklag in 1998. This version was commissioned by The Royal Norwegian Navy Band in 2002 and re-edited in 2018.

The incommunicability between different cultures and worlds and the confusion that this generates lie at the heart of this work: the fanfare-like themes that characterise the introduction, together with the "Arabian" melodies of the Presto, represent these differences. The bare theme of the Andante, while offering a glimpse of hope, also describes the impossibility of a meeting and the pain this situation causes. The empty fifth and dissonance of the minor second are elements that feature throughout this work. In the Coda, moreover, all these ideas reappear "kaleidoscopically", amidst a convulsive and excitingly chaotic atmosphere.
