Hawkeye Festival Overture begins with a bright opening fanfare which leads to a rhythmic Allegro section. An Andante section in 3/4 time features a lyric trumpet solo and numerous harmonic suspensions. A driving percussion interlude in 5/4 with a gradual pyramid that builds in the winds leads to a return of the Allegro. The work ends with a powerful re-statement of the syncopated 5/4 motives and finishes with a flourish. Commissioned to commemorate its 20th anniversary season, this work was written for the Nebraska Wind Symphony, Omahas community band, in 1997. It is in traditional overture form, with a bold introductory theme in the horns answered by the trumpets. The material that follows presents the main theme in solo voices followed by the entire band. Contrasting material follows, leading to a recapitulation and eventually to a jubilant coda. While not intentionally programmatic, the title of the work does reflect the bands geographic location.

A strong, full sound will result from the richly scored chromatic parallel triads.?For musical contrast, the middle section is quasi-rubato and very lyrical, relying mainly on the woodwinds with low brass added later. The transition back to the original rhythmic fanfare is smoothly written and effectively brings the work to a close.
