The three dance episodes that make up the suite are symbolic in an analogous sense to this 'reaching' principle: the first - Earth Dance - is a vigorous overture, pushing out the frontiers; the interlude - Moon Dance - contemplates the huge distances to be crossed and Sun Dance represents the realisation of the American dream, rhythmic and full of energy. William Walton's last 'original' work of note was the Prologo e Fantasia in 1981-2, commissioned by Mstislav Rostropovitch and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington D.C. It was first performed in London by Rostropovitch and the National Symphony Orchestra. The work consists of three sections. The first movement forms the Prologo, which is slightly reminiscent of the French Overture. The Fantasia opens briskly with characteristic Waltonian energy, and leads, after a climax, into the thematically connected final section Fuga finta (or 'make-believe fugue'). Note to conductors: orchestra performances of this work vary significantly, from a total length of just under five minutes in one performance to over six minutes and forty seconds in another. The audio presented with this arrangement is somewhat in the middle of the timings. So the metronomic markings may not necessarily be taken literally.

The White Thrill is a composition written on behalf of the "Musikkapelle Sankt Anton am Arlberg", in Austria. The theme refers to the ski race "Der weisse Rausch", that takes place every year in Sankt Anton. The composition is in an overture form, with a majestic introduction, a fast part, a slow part and a reprise of the fast part. One theme characterizes the entire composition, with its pleasantly syncopated and fascinating rhythms; symbolizing in music the sinuous gait of the track and the rapid maneuvers of the skiers. In the introduction, the majestic aspect, symbolizes the charm of the summits covered with snow, the grandeur of the alpine landscape. In the slow part, one can imagine the quiet of winter nights lit by the moon and the stars. A beautiful and ingenious piece. Duration: 8.00
