Shakespeare Pictures - Nigel Hess
While Music Director and House Composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Nigel Hess wrote music for over twenty productions. Hess has taken music from three works to form a 12-minute suite called Shakespeare Pictures. It begins with the boisterous overture to Much Ado About Nothing, followed by a contrasting slow movement depicting the beautiful statue from A Winter's Tale before displaying huge pomp of Caesar's Rome with The Entry to the Senate. This work is ideal for bands that have played and enjoyed Hess's work East Coast Pictures. This wind band suite was commissioned in 2008 by Birmingham Symphonic Winds. The original music is now expanded and re-orchestrated to form a new three-movement suite for symphonic wind orchestra.

Scramble! - Nigel Hess
Commissioned in 1994 by the Royal Air Force, 'Scramble!' Is a concert overture for symphonic wind band inspired by images of the RAF's airfields during the Battle of Britain, immortalised for ever in such films as Reach for the Skies.The pastoral opening depicts the lull before the storm: the young pilots sitting in wicker chairs outside their barracks on a sunlit morning. The peace is, of course, deceptive, suddenly amid siren sounds, there is a shout of 'Scramble!', and a rush to the waiting planes. In no time at all the squadron is airborne, heading for a skirmish over the English Channel and beyond. A lyrical central section featuring a solo cornet depicts the stillness many pilots described as they flew to engage the enemy, before the battle breaks out once more. For those who returned, it would be only a short while before, once again, they would hear the familiar shout of 'Scramble!'

Stephenson's Rocket - Nigel Hess
This seven-minute concert overture recalls the early days of the railways, and one of the most famous engines of all time, 'The Rocket'. It was commissioned by the Director of the North Hertfordshire Wind Band, Phillip Ellis, who is the great-great-great-grandson of Stephenson, and depicts the Victorian carnival atmosphere on the day of the engine's inauguration. An ideal work for a good school, youth or county level band.

'Courte Ouverture' as translated from the French means 'Short Overture'. Written for a medium level ensemble, it commences with a high trill in the piccolo followed by a flourish in the flutes before the main theme is introduced. This primary melody can be heard throughout the selection. It then transitions into an almost hymn-like middle section before an accelerando takes us back to the flute flourish and main theme. This piece uses the music ensemble to its fullest. Memorable melodies and traditional harmonies are spread throughout the instrumentation. Harlequin is the most popular of the comic servant characters from the Italian commedia dell'arte who, although a slow thinker, was acrobatic and nimble - he would never perform a simple action when the addition of a cartwheel or backflip would spice up the movement! These characteristics are aptly portrayed musically in Bruce Broughton's mini concert overture. Originally published for brass band in 1984, this revised version for wind band coveys all the hustle, bustle, and agility of the character in a finely crafted musical structure. This suite of three short movements depicts Popcatepetl, a dormant volcano in Mexico. Useful for developing understanding of this form, the composition includes overture, ballad, and Latin styles. Opportunities abound for teaching the concepts of dynamic contrast, balance between sections, and rhythmic development. There are several short solos, but most of the composition works on the development of full-ensemble skills. Although the movements can be performed as stand-alone selections, the entire suite is less than 6 minutes in length.
