DANCE SUITE (Concert Band) - Muldowney, Dominic

Includes:1. Hey2. Pavane/Waltz3. Polka4. Waltz/Galliard5. Tangos6. Break-DanceDance Suite displays a variety of historical dance forms from a twentieth century viewpoint. The six dances move forward historically from the ancient Hey, through Waltz and Polka, to the sophisticated Tango and the jazz tradition. The rhythm that typifies each dance is constantly under attack, sometimes from a different dance style altogether. These intrusive elements are most obvious in the final dance and prompts the double meaning of the title.I. HEYHey is constructed like a mediaeval motet, where the main blocks of material are rhythmically unconnected to one another. The percussion is the most disconnected of all and seems to have arrived from a Chinese carnival. The scoring alludes to the eight, four and two foot pipes of a baroque organ.I. PAVANE/WALTZAfter a nod in the direction of Dowland's Lachrimae Pavan, the piece seems to wander to and fro between the 16th century and the 19th century world of the Lehr waltz.I. POLKAThe Polka is derived from a four bar fragment found in Stravinsky's sketchbook for The Rite of Spring above which is written: "Dieppe Polka".I. WALTZ/GALLIARDThis is a reversal of the date-shift process in the second movement, in that the wandering goes backwards rather than forwards, particularly to the William Byrd of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.I. TANGOSA slow sentimental tango is sandwiched between an abstract deconstructed one, both of which are developed in Dominic Muldowney's opera The Voluptuous Tango.I. BREAK-DANCEBreak-Dance is the fastest, hardest and strangest movement. Its exuberance fractures the texture, which slowly crumbles midway through the movement, only to be resurrected mirror fashion. The piece is a species of palindrome with no true centre, hence: "Break-Dance".Conductors are free to make a selection from these dances for festival or competition programmes, when limited performance time is available.

    El Toro Rojo Grande

A lively Spanish flavored paso doble that is both entertaining and educational. Written in two distinctive sections, the first is a stately theme that evokes the sounds of the bullring. The second section is in the style of a lively Spanish dance in 6/8 time. Also provides a chance to show off your star trumpeter as it includes a couple of very effective trumpet solos (only goes to F in the staff). Very impressive composition for this grade level. Muy excelente!

Juan For the Road (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Carroll, Fergal

A Spanish Promenade. This lively little piece is in a continuous with no changes of metre. Though the overall marking is 'steady', it is based on a cheerful Spanish dance with a distinctly carnival mood which provides plenty of rhythmic interest and a few other delights along the way; the middle section is only slightly more reflective. The original title was 'Spanish Promenade', but then it seemed that before setting off in this time signature you would probably need 'Juan' - or even two - for the road. AB grade 2.5Duration: 02:30

March Grandioso (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

"March: Grandioso", by Roland F. Seitz, is one of the most stately and distinctive marches ever composed. With this arrangement by Robert W. Smith, the classic melody is now accessible to the beginning band. Perfect for concert or festival use, this setting is notated in 4/4 time and uses only the first six notes introduced by most band methods. Your beginning band will sound well beyond their years!

MOUNTAIN SONG (Prestige Concert Band Extra Score) - Sparke, Philip

Extra Score. Mountain Song is a description of a short mountain walk the composer took in the Austrian Ziller Valley. As he climbed even higher, the only sound was the rustle of branches and the gentle tolling of the church bell in the valley below. On reaching the peak, the full panorama of the Alps opened up. The work ends with the church bell tolling quietly. (Grade 4-5) Performance time 7'05" (Recorded on QPRM124D MIGHTY VOICE, Great British Music for Wind Band Vol.3)

PLAIN MAN'S HAMMER, A (Novello Symphonic) - Dalby, Martin

Score & Parts. The whole shape of A Plain Man's Hammer owes something to classical sonata form. It is a two part form of which the first is an exposition containing two tonally contrasted subjects and the second contains a development section where harmonies move rapidly towards a recapitulation of the two original subjects, this time the contrast being reconciled in the home key. The first large section of A Plain Man's Hammer is an exposition containing two main ideas and other material associated with them. Development is replaced by a parade of incomplete parodies: a waltz almost in the style of Chopin; a sort of Tango; a Mahlerian march; something close to Janacek; a cheap imitation of a Flamenco; a corruption of Oranges and Lemons; a pop song; a military march which gets somewhat out of hand; a Viennese Waltz to set your feet tripping, and an even cheaper imitation of a Flamenco. At the end of the work the associated material of the opening reappears in maturity; the major ideas play a subservient role, reappearing only in the final coda. Duration: 14 mins.

Scramble! (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hess, Nigel

Commissioned in 1994 by the Royal Air Force, 'Scramble!' Is a concert overture for symphonic wind band inspired by images of the RAF's airfields during the Battle of Britain, immortalised for ever in such films as Reach for the Skies. The pastoral opening depicts the lull before the storm: the young pilots sitting in wicker chairs outside their barracks on a sunlit morning. The peace is, of course, deceptive, suddenly amid siren sounds, there is a shout of 'Scramble!', and a rush to the waiting planes. In no time at all the squadron is airborne, heading for a skirmish over the English Channel and beyond. A lyrical central section featuring a solo cornet depicts the stillness many pilots described as they flew to engage the enemy, before the battle breaks out once more. For those who returned, it would be only a short while before, once again, they would hear the familiar shout of 'Scramble!'Duration: 7.00

Slavonic Rock March Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

According to his teachers, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), was not particularly gifted. His special talents were acknowledged only in 1865 when he had been working for the Ministry of Finances for some years. In 1866 he was appointed teacher at the Conservatory and applied himself to composing. His oeuvre is fairly extensive and many of his compositions receive a high ranking on the international list of classical music, including his six symphonies, solo concertos (violin concerto and piano concertos), ballets (The Nut Cracker, Swan Lake), and his overtures (1812 and Romeo and Juliette). In 1893 Tchaikovsky died of Cholera after drinking a glass of infected water. His Slavonic March is a popular concert piece for symphonic orchestra that is still frequently performed in concert halls. David Well arranged the theme and created a contemporary march in rock style. Tchaikovsky once said to an unsatisfied teacher: 'I will be a great composer within 10 years time.' 02:30
