Lyric for Band - George Walker

In 1946, George Walker was still doing graduate work at the Curtis institute when he composed Lyric for Strings, which would prove over the coming decades to become one of the most performed and enduring string orchestra works of the 20th Century. This first-ever edition for symphonic wind band was arranged by Dr. Luci Disano and premiered by The President's Own United States Marine Band on August 24, 2022. George Walker (June 27, 1922 - August 23, 2018) began his groundbreaking career as a young piano virtuoso and was admitted to Oberlin College on a scholarship following his first public recital at the age of 14. Graduating with the highest honors in his Conservatory class, he was admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, becoming the first black graduate of this renowned music school. His works demonstrate a wide range of artistic excellence in genres ranging from instrumental and vocal solos and chamber music to compositions for orchestra and other large ensembles. He is the first black composer to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

Lost Lake at Seymour Valley - Danny Choi

Based on the exhilarating bike ride on the Seymour Valley Demonstration Forest trail and a detour into the remote, beautiful Lost Lake, I associate this piece with some great memories. Glistening in a quiet peace, Lost Lake_x001A_also known as Rolf Lake_x001A_is calm and warm in the summer. Not many people know about it, so it is easy to find yourself alone, surrounded by beautiful nature, isolated from humanity. Back in high school, I would bike up to Lost Lake with one of my best friends Masanori Miyanabe, we'd have music playing off a bluetooth speaker as we biked against the cool air under the hot sun. Powering through uphill stretches with the reward of gliding downhill, when we would finally make it to the lake, we would put our bikes down by the bushes_x001A_no locks, no security_x001A_and we would make our way down the rough logs towards the tiny strip of land suitable for basking in the sun, snacking, and maybe even swimming. In order to beat the sunset, reluctantly, we would mount our bicycles once again and find our way back to the Seymour Valley trail, where we would enjoy the evening ride home. -D.I.D. Choi

Trombones in Paradise - Jordan Sterk

Trombones in Paradise by Jordan Sterk will give your trombone section an opportunity to shine in this bright and fun feature piece. Using only the first six notes of the B-flat concert scale and only "natural" glissandos for the trombones, this piece is sure to come together quickly and be enjoyed by your young students. Your entire band will love learning one of their first syncopated rhythms based around the 3-2 son clave, a staple rhythm of Afro-Cuban and Latin music. Less common young band Latin percussion instruments such as maracas and claves provide additional parts for your percussionists and add an authentic flair to the music. Intrada Furiosa by young Swiss composer Gauthier Dupertuis is an energetic opener for wind orchestra, featuring brilliant fanfare writing for brass and challenging lines in the woodwinds, as well as more lyrical parts. One of the goals of FC Music Publishing is to promote and develop the talent of young composers. Send In The Clowns - Stephen Sondheim

Send in the Clowns is one of the most well known songs written by composer Stephen Sondheim. The ironic lyrics have a present-day meaning. It was recorded by the likes of Judy Collins, Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand. Between them all, they brought this song eternal fame. The Norwegian arranger, Richard Johnsen, who is very familiar with this musical repertoire, made this beautiful arrangement and kept it very close to the sound of the original version.
