The American conductor and composer Uri Hodorov, actually working in Israel, has been inspired by the great Johann Sebastian Bach to write this original, light and rather easy 'toccata and fugue' for symphonic band. The title clearly indicates that, despite the references to the master's model, this composition is contemporary and rather short, in order to be within reach of the average wind band. A nice tribute to old father Back avoiding the ambush of the pastiche.

This composition by Bob Gay and Marcel Peeters is a musical nostalgic recollection of 'those good old times...when everything was better than nowadays (?)'. It evokes the atmosphere and the conviviality one could find in those years in the music-halls and variety theatres with their singers, dancers, jugglers, illusionists etc. Today one can hardly hear this type of music any more, except at special occasions or in the circus world. In the meantime, the 'musical' has become the worthy successor to the operetta.

Jos Alam Gil became musical director of the Banda del Centre Artistic Musical de Btera in 1979 and has won many awards with this fine symphonic band. His two part concert piece for symphonic band 'Aspectes' was very successful at the 1998 international contest 'Certamen' at Valencia. The first part 'Antigua danza de palas y planchas' (old dance with sticks and plates) starts with an introductory adagio followed by a lively allegretto interrupted by another quiet adagio. The second part 'La Romeria' (the pilgrimage ) starts with a dynamic allegro vivo followed by a lyrical andante introduced by bell ringing.The driving allegro vivo starts again when the pilgrims start their journey back home. The orchestration is strikingly refined. This is a very beautiful melodic concert piece for symphonic band.

Christmas in the Alps enchants people because of the very special atmosphere with a combination of attentive silence and the blue shining moonlight. At Christmas time, one can often hear in the distance a small group of wind players performing some old traditional carols in front of one or other little chapel in the mountains. This Christmas Carol medley by Willi Mrz reminds us of that tradition. He has arranged tunes from ancient Bavarian and Austrian Christmas Carols and shepherd songs. The religious 'Andachtsjodler' is still sung at Christmas time in the churches of Bavaria and Tyrol.

This composition is based on an old Chinese myth about the constellation Draco which is still to be seen in the firmament between the Great Bear and the Little Bear. The Chinese people believed that when there was en eclipse, Draco was eating the sun. They tried to drive away the dragon with heavy drum beatings. The score boasts two main themes evoking respectively the sun and the Chinese people. You can hear successively the Chinese worshipping the rising sun, the threat of Draco and the triumph of the sun and the Chinese over the dragon. Because of the Asiatic sounds you will imagine to make a short trip through the ancient Chinese Empire.

On November 13th 1985 the town of Armero in Columbia was literally swept away. It was bombarded by an avalanche of mud and stones set off by the melting of glaciers caused by the soon-to-erupt Volcano Nevado del Ruiz.
