Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song is based on the tune Suiryo-Bushi, which comes from the shamisen tradition and opens with two contrasting statements of the melody followed by several variations each in an own style based upon the same tune, or sometimes only fragments of it. In one of the variants, the pentatonic scale is used. The final section is in the form of a scherzo, which eventually forms the accompaniment to a final presentation of the folk tune. The Old Red Mill

As one of the most stunning new pieces in the catalog this year, The Old Red Mill may be Brant Karrick's best work to date. It opens with a lush and beautiful lyrical section before moving into a very creative, lilting up-tempo section. The piece has a down-home feel, but is a wonderful new addition to the literature. It is surely destined to become a standard.

The Wand of Youth, Suite No.1 - III. Minuet (Old Style) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Elgar, Edward - Noble, Paul

The Wand of Youth suites, subtitled Music to a Child's Play, were written in 1869 when Elgar was only twelve years old, music written for a play and acted by the Elgar children for a private family theatrical production. He noted the tunes down in a sketchbook and in 1907, forty years later, he rearranged with only minor changes and orchestrated them as the two suites titled The Wand of Youth, Suite Nos. 1 and 2. Although The Wand of Youth suites date from Elgar's mature years, he insisted on calling it Opus 1, because he wrote these pieces originally for piano many years earlier.

As With Gladness Men of Old (Concert Band with Optional Choir - Score and Parts) - Noble & Willcocks

As with Gladness Men of Old is an Epiphany hymn, written by William Chatterton Dix on 6 January 1859 (Epiphany) while he was ill in bed. Though considered by many as a Christmas carol, it is found in the Epiphany section of many hymnals and still used by many churches. The music was adapted by William Henry Monk in 1861 from a tune written by Conrad Kocher in 1838. The hymn is based on the visit of the Biblical magi in the Nativity of Jesus. The hymn used Matthew 2:1-12 as a theme to compare the journey of the Biblical magi to visit the baby Jesus to each Christian's personal pilgrimage and as a reminder that it is not the value of the gifts, it is the value of giving and adoration to Jesus that is what Christians should seek. It is the only well-known Epiphany hymn or carol about the Biblical magi that avoids referring to them as either magi or kings and does not state how many there were. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.
