Originally published for brass band in 1949, Wilfred Heaton's festival march Praise is a classic example of his creativity and was rightly described as 'groundbreaking' when it first appeared in print. Using an old chorus melody 'Praise, O Praise Him' – a melody that has now fallen from use with The Salvation Army – Praise is full of drive and energy, with typically quirky features that require detailed attention in rehearsal.

There are also two slightly less well-known tunes that are linked to the carols - While Shepherds Watched and Angels from the Realms of Glory - and the piece concludes with a final flourish from O Come, All Ye Faithful.Its dramatic opening and imaginative structure make it a rewarding piece to rehearse and perform, and it certainly fulfills all the requirements of a Christmas show opener! So, we firmly believe that this overture will be a popular addition to Christmas repertoire for concert band in the same way as it was in its original version for brass band.

Variations on 'Laudate Dominum' - Edward Gregson
The theme is a noble hymn tune by Sir Hubert H. Parry, associated with the words 'O praise ye the Lord'. There are seven contrasting variations that will provide much interest to the player as well as the listener, the seventh of which is a fugato which leads into a triumphant finale where the theme is heard for the first time in its completion. This, we feel, will be a significant work for Wind Band as it has been for the brass band movement.
