Hoe Down -from Rodeo - Aaron Copland

Aaron Copland (1900-1990) has been called the Dean of American Composers. He was one of the first composers to use American folk idioms in his music. From the ballet,Copland extracted Four Dance Episodes to form an orchestral suite for the concert hall: Buckaroo Holiday, Coral Nocturne, Saturday Night Waltz, and Hoe Down. Hoe Down uses the square-dance tunes of Bonaparte and McLeod's Reel.Polyrhtyhms are derived from the jazz idiom - thus, making the work light, humorous, and full of zest. (3:00)

    Winter's Knight - Peter Terry

The Winter's Knight guards the Queen of Winter as she sweeps coldness into the world. On his brow is a crown of stars and his sword is made of ice and horn. He rides a horse as black as night, and in his wake cold winds blanket the world with ice and snow. The visual imagery created in this exceptional composition for beginning students is magnificent.

    Many Moons - Peter Sciaino

A poignant balladic description of a memory of a New Mexico night sky, this lyrical piece encapsulates the feeling of wonder and humility felt when we stare out at a sky seemingly filled with hundreds of little moons. Beginning with subtle percussion and a cross-cued euphonium solo, a wistful theme is developed and passed throughout the ensemble. Multiple expressive demands related to phrasing, balance, listening, and tone let you teach these in a composition that sounds harder than it is. Use this ballad as a contrast to your opener in concert or as a second selection in festival or contest performances.

Using exposed instrumental lines, a developing three-note theme, and contemporary harmonic and percussive elements, this composition for mature concert bands is a great choice for contest or as a unique and different programing contrasting selection.
