Slow March with Celebration - Timothy Broege

Slow March takes as its structural inspiration the traditional New Orleans funeral music played by brass bands. A slow dirge is played as the funeral cortege exits from the church and begins the journey toward the cemetary, afterwhich the music becomes festive and up-tempo to send the soul off to a happier place. (4:30)

Ignatian Fanfare - John R. Bourgeois

Written for the centennial of Loyola University, New Orleans and premiered by the Loyola University Band on April 12, 2012 with the composer conducting. This fanfare is based on a motive from the Jesuit motto "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam" ("to the greater glory of God") and is based on the notes A, D, G. The fanfare opens with timpani, a tintinnabulum of bells and brass, and wolf calls in the horns. A martial hymn tune appears which evokes the soldierly order of Ignatius Loyolas early years. The work closes with a rhythmic ostinato based on the words "Fight, fight, fight, ye men of the South!" The composer is a graduate of Loyola and received an honorary Doctor of Music degree in 2005.

Bailey Switch March - Earl J. Fox Jr.

Bailey Switch March is dedicated to the beginner band in Picayune, Mississippi. The title comes from the citys original name, as it was a switching location for trains leaving New Orleans heading north. While it was written to retain a stately quality almost like a processional, it can also be played successfully at a faster tempo for an exhilarating and impressive performance.

Nearer My God to Thee - Luther Henderson

If your band enjoyed the popular 'Just A Closer Walk,' here's another Canadian Brass favorite, carefully scored for full band by Calvin Custer. It begins with a slow 3/4 version, in a New Orleans 'street band' style, and then kicks into snazzy Dixieland, with small band features and roaring full band sections. Another classic from the masters of showmanship.

Tribute to Dixie - Gilbert Tinner

This scintillating work was written as a tribute to the jazz musicians of the New Orleans, Dixieland and Chicago styles of the 20s and 30s. It consists of an opening swing section in true Dixieland style, followed by a sleazy blues section. Ideally the band should be divided so there is a separate Dixieland band consisting of trumpet, clarinet, alto or tenor saxophone, trombone, banjo (optional) and tuba or double bass. Although the Dixieland band are mostly accompanied by the remainder of the concert band the accompanying players also get the chance to shine as every now and again they take over the musical themes.

    Divertimento - Oliver Waespi

This grand work contains four contrasting movements. The first movement, Prelude, takes the form of an overture: it raises the curtains and marks the beginning of the piece. The brilliant motifs of the opening are contrasted by a calmer and more lyrical central section, after which the triumphant opening returns for the movement's end. The second movement, Meditation, explores the intimate sounds of the oboe, as well as those of the flute and French horn, backed by a rich orchestral accompaniment. The third movement presents a more upbeat Procession, but not a Procession of the Nobles, as written by Rimsky-Korsakov. Quite the opposite, Procession resembles a "second line"procession from New Orleans, whose up-beat rhythms invite everyone to dance in the streets rather than the measured pacing of a march. Divertimento ends with a Hoedown, the tradition American folk dance idiom, when the band has the opportunity for both vivacity and virtuosity and may play as fast as it can. It is important to play all four movements with precision, clarity and, most importantly, enthusiasm.
